J. Mullins Jewelry & Gifts’ Power of Pink event will feature Little Pink Book Series acclaimed author Maryann Makekau from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 22.

“Maryann wrote the first book of the series, When Your Teacher Has Cancer, as a gift to her friend of 25 years who was fighting breast cancer. We are excited to have her at J. Mullins Jewelry & Gifts to help us celebrate breast cancer survivors with our Power of Pink Event,” Kathy Oxley, event organizer and store employee said.

The Little Pink Book Series features two other books, When Your Mom Has Cancer and When Your Mom’s Cancer Doesn’t Go Away.

Murfreesboro native Makekau wrote the books through the eyes of children, featuring whimsical stick figures giving supportive tools to those battling breast cancer and their families and friends.

“Maryann will sign copies of her books, which have been used by the American Cancer Society,” Oxley said. “We invite the community to join us for an evening of fun, refreshments and prizes.”

Makekau also wrote the Little Patriot Books Series, which includes When Your Dad Goes to War and When Your Mom Goes to War. For more information about the author, visit www.becausehopematter.com.

A variety of pink door prizes will be given away, but the grand finale will be a sealed auction for a white gold with pink sapphires breast cancer ribbon pendant, made by the store’s designer, Thayer Walker.

J. Mullins Jewelry, located at 352 W. Northfield Blvd., will also donate 25 percent of all purchases made during the event Murfreesboro’s Power of Pink Organization.
