Wow, Halloween is almost here and just like in past years, the Post wants to tell you about all the scary and spooky fun.
And while we like our Top 10 (actually 11) lists, this time we aren’t exactly counting. Check ‘em out. We have even provided a Google map of the events at murfreesboropost.com. So there’s no excuse not to have a little spooktacular fun.
• The 8th annual Barfield Halloween Bash.
Barfield Bash is celebrating its eighth year at Barfield Crescent Park, on Barfield Crescent Road, with Murfreesboro’s Scariest Hayride. The haunted hayride starts at dark each night. Admission is $5 to see Michael Myers, the girl from the Ring and all sorts of scary stuff. The fun begins Wednesday, Oct. 22 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 25.
A Not-So-Haunted Trail and carnival is planned for Oct. 24-25. It starts at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $3. Game tickets are 50 cents. There will be music, cake walks, games and prizes.
• La Vergne’s Trail of Treats.
Sponsored by the La Vergne Parks and Recreation Department, the Trail of Treats is a tradition in North Rutherford County. This fun free event is set for 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at Veterans Memorial Park on Floyd Mayfield Drive in La Vergne.
Kids of all ages should wear their costumes for a few hours of fun, visiting booths and playing games like “Jumping Through The Pumpkin Patch,” “Grave Digging for Candy” and transversing the spider web course.
• Gross Grub.
The La Vergne Library’s children’s area will again feature Gross Grub, beginning at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at the library, located at 5063 Murfreesboro Road in La Vergne.
Snacks such as “Kitty Litter Cake,” “Spider Web Pizza” and “Dirty Dishwater punch,” will be among the featured dishes at this year’s event.
Young people are encouraged to wear their costumes and stop by for food, fun and more.

• Safe Trick or Treating.
Little spooks and demons, and their cautious parents, have three opportunities for safe trick and treating.
The Avenue Murfreesboro will feature trick and treating and entertainment from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. In addition to collecting candy, activities include interactive art stations, balloon artist, face painting and more.
Trick or Treat Downtown. Parents are invited to escort their Halloween-costumed children to collect candy at a variety of stops around the Public Square at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Look for the orange pumpkin displayed on the door or window of participating businesses.
Trick or Treat at Stones River Mall. Enjoy mall-wide trick or treating and ghoulish Halloween fun at Stones River Mall at 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Plus, tour the kid-friendly haunted house, compliments of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department.
• Halloween events at Oaklands Historic House Museum.
Oaklands Historic House Museum, 900 N. Maney Ave., holds a variety of historical Halloween themed events.
Explore Victorian mourning customs from Oct. 2-31 with Widows, Weepers and Wakes: Mourning Customs Exhibit and from Oct. 15-Nov. 3 with Headstones, Hearses and Heartaches: A Mourning Customs Exhibit.
Oaklands also holds Mourning by Candlelight, a tour of Evergreen Cemetery and Oaklands Mansion, and Headstones, Hearses and Heartaches: A Mourning Melodrama, a theatrical one-act play in Maney Hall. Halloween events at the Sam Davis Home
The Sam Davis Home, 1399 Sam Davis Rd., in Smyrna, will be prepared for a funeral with mirrors draped in black cloth and clocks stopped at the time of death during A House in Mourning: Expression of Mourning Customs in the 19th Century from Oct. 8-Nov. 2.
Tours of the home are also available during Pumpkin Patch Days, which features Halloween games and activities, reading circle and an opportunity to pick your favorite pumpkin.
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25, offers a full weekend of haunted happenings at the Sam Davis Home.
The weekend features Ghost Tours beginning with a haunted hayride of the plantation. Once the hayride comes to a dead stop, enter the historic home to hear tour guides share their own strange experiences from beyond. The tour is not recommended for anyone under the age of 10. Admission is $5.
On Saturday Oct. 25, A Frightful Night at the Sam Davis Home will feature a catered dinner, a scary movie and all that is included in Ghost Tours. First enjoy dinner and a movie before embarking on a haunted hayride of the plantation and guided ghost tours of the Sam Davis Home. Reservations are required, call 615-459-2341.
Great Pumpkin Fest
This annual event is held 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring, 502 S.E. Broad St. Wear your costume and enjoy fun Halloween art projects and other kid-friendly activities. Reduced admission to $4 per person with a donated canned food item. Phone 615-890-2300. Cannonsburgh Harvest Days and Fiber Festival
While not Halloween specific, this annual festival from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 is a celebration of the arrival of fall with old-time music, clogging and traditional fiber artists. Free admission. Cannonsburgh is located at 312 S. Front St. just across Broad Street from City Hall.
