City elections workers are left twiddling their thumbs as less than 1,000 voters turned up at the polls this morning in the Murfreesboro Election.

Things had improved slightly by the afternoon with 1,952 voters casting ballots by 3 p.m.

Only 868 voters had cast ballots as of 11 a.m., Rutherford County Elections Administrator Hooper Penuel said.

In early voting around 3,000 voters went to the polls in advance of today's election for city mayor, three city council seats and three city school board seats.

In things don't pick up this afternoon, the city is looking at a turn out close to 2006 when less than 5,000 voters turned out in the April 15 Murfreesboro Municipal election.

For those who haven't cast a ballot yet, polls are open until 7 p.m.
