Two suspects accused of robbing two men at gunpoint in separate crimes within 20 minutes were apprehended within two hours early Monday, Murfreesboro Police reported.
Suspects Anthony T. Morgan, 29, of Tupelo, Miss., and Steven L. Lewis, 25, of Memphis, were charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, reported Detective Ed Gorham who charged the pair.
The suspects were captured on videotaped surveillance cameras apparently using one victim’s credit cards at the Dodge Store, Gorham reported. Their vehicle was filmed on videotape from the BP Station on Middle Tennessee Boulevard.
Police located them at the Imperial Inn on Northwest Broad Street and recovered the handgun and one victim’s wallet in the trash can in their room, the detective reported.
In the first robbery, Officer Josh Meredith reported victim Brian Lashway of Coventry Lane was walking home from work about 2:35 a.m. on Cason Lane when two males approached him at Christian Life Church.
“The two suspects were walking on either side of him when one of them produced a small caliber automatic handgun and stated, ‘don’t move,’” Meredith reported. “The victim stated that while he was being held at gunpoint by the first suspect, the second suspect began patting him down and took his wallet.”
They ran away with his wallet containing $20 cash, credit cards and driver’s license. When Lashway arrived home, he canceled his credit card and called police. While Meredith was talking with Lashway, the credit card company notified him his card was used at Mapco Express and the Dodge’s store.
Officer James Smith obtained the videotape from the Dodge’s store showing both suspects.
About 20 minutes later, Officer Ricky Haley reported victim Miguel Romano, 33, of Bradyville Pike, returned home from the BP Station on Middle Tennessee Boulevard where two robbers armed with a handgun robbed him in the driveway of his home.
“One of the suspects demanded Mr. Romano to the ground and placed a pistol to his head,” Haley reported. “The other subject went to the Jeep (owned by Romano) and took Mr. Romano’s wallet.”
His wallet contained $50.
Officer Matt Garrett went to the BP Station and obtained the videotape showed the robbers in a Buick LeSabre followed Romano around the store and follow him when he leaves in his Jeep.
Police located the Buick LeSabre at Imperial Inn and located the suspects inside a room with a handgun and Lashway’s wallet.
Morgan gave a statement but Lewis declined. They were booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where a hearing is set Sept. 14 in General Sessions Court.
