Police thankful for community response

Tired Murfreesboro Police working 12-hour shifts in tornado zones were “energized” by community volunteers who brought them food, snacks and soft drinks, the assistant chief said last week.

Police are operating three command posts at Haynes and Buckle, Riverview and Royal and Compton and Esquire to prevent looting of tornado-damaged homes and to keep sightseers from crowding the streets, said Assistant Chief Roy Fields. Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers are operating a command post at The Avenue on Medical Center Parkway.

They are checking licenses to ensure people are supposed to be in the neighborhood.

To show their appreciation, people brought officers food, grills to cook on and tables and chairs to eat on. One boy even shared his Easter candy.

“We are so thankful,” Fields said. “This is what allows us to do our job. The community energizes us.”

Capt. Anita Flagg said she believes “God has a purpose for everything.” In this instance, police are partnering with the community.

Fields thanked everyone who contributed to the police.

“People make you realize you’re a part of the community,” Fields said. “We’re so thankful.”

Bravo to the Murfreesboro Police Department. The response to the disaster that came upon the Murfreesboro community means alot. Not only to the people that endured losses of great magnitude, but to the cleanup crews as well.

Also to the Murfreesboro Fire Department and Rutherford County EMS crews who unselfishly gave of their time to help those in need.

When we are faced with a catastrophe, it is nice to know that there are helping hands out there and a shoulder to lean on.

I am proud of the Murfreesboro community.

These men and women are the greatest! They are always there when and where needed. We have the best of the best in Rutherford County. I hope those who are always finding fault will remember what these men and women have done for this county these past few days, because next time it might be you they are coming to assist. And you can bet they will be there because that's the kind of people they are. Thank you so much to all of these great men and women for all you do!!

All that is said here is 100% Truth. The police have been working 12 hour shifts, and some overtime since Friday April 10, when the tornadoes touched down. My friend is one of them. The Police here are very good people, and will do anything to help the people. Sure, we have the occasional cop that likes to give a ticket, or tow a car even though the wrecker driver offers to help out with gas to a disabled man that has only a small amount of money. But for the major part, they go out of their way to help. Matt Lovejoy who died recently was one of the best. When me and my ex wife was homeless and sleeping in a box behind a Kroger, he would oftem bring us pizza and blankets. We truely have the best and most caring police force here in Murfreesboro. Thanks goes out to all that have sacrificed thei'r families time and their own rest for the goodwill of Murfreesboro. May God bless you all.
