Police followed a blood trail to discover a man who suffered cuts to his back and arm was allegedly injured by his girlfriend Friday at their home, officers reported.

Victim Zebulun Byrd, 22, of Givens Court was found bleeding and walking about 3:15 a.m. Friday on Greenland Drive, Officer Mark Wood reported.

“Byrd had cuts to his back and left arm,” Wood reported. “Byrd stated that he was assaulted by three black males on Givens Court. Due to Mr. Byrd’s injuries, he was transported to MTMC.”

Wood and Officer Cody Ciazza followed a blood trail to Byrd’s home where they found girlfriend Sydney Melvin who told police “he put his hands on me so I cut him.” She told officer she struck Byrd with a glass.

A witness told police the couple argued and Melvin pushed Byrd, who fell into a window.

Police charged Melvin with domestic assault and took her to Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where she was booked. A 1-year-old girl and a 7-month-old boy were given to Melvin’s mother.

Ciazza collected broken glass and placed it into evidence.

A hearing on Melvin’s charges is pending in General Sessions Court.

In an unrelated case, Officer Jason Brown reported a store clerk was robbed while detaining a customer accused of shoplifting late Saturday night on Memorial Boulevard.

The clerk told police he saw the suspect stealing candy at the Kwik Sak, detained him and recovered the merchandise, Brown reported. Simultaneously, a second mane entered the store and kept his hand in his pocket like he carried a handgun.

“He demanded Mr. Patel open the cash register,” Brown reported. “Mr. Patel refused and grabbed the second suspect by the collar. A fight started and Mr. Patel was punched in the face.”

Both suspects fled in a maroon, late model four-door vehicle.

In a third assault, Officer Daniel Love reported a bartender was in fear for her life when a customer pointed a handgun at her when she refused to let a customer bring his own whiskey into Campus Pub about 1 a.m. Saturday on Gunnerson Avenue.

The bartender reported a man pulled the .45-caliber handgun on her when she told him he couldn’t bring in his own whiskey.

“She never heard any threats, just saw the gun coming toward her head,” Love reported.

People who have information on any of the assaults are asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 893-2717 or Crime Stoppers at 893-STOP between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
