Police fired three non-lethal rounds at a suspect armed with a knife threatening a man and officers during a domestic assault call Wednesday on Dixon Court, the Murfreesboro Police spokesman said.
Suspect Jason A. Greer, 32, of Johnson City, Tenn., was treated at Middle Tennessee Medical Center as a standard procedure after being shot with the rounds described similar to a “bean bag type” and an undisclosed medical condition, said spokesman Kyle Evans.
Officer Matt Stern charged Greer with three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of domestic aggravated assault and vandalism.
Also, a man at the home was later charged with manufacturing methamphetamine after Greer tipped off police.
“The fight between (Harry) Brown and Greer was over the manufacture of the methamphetamine,” Evans said. “It involved the (Greer’s) girlfriend, who objected them making the meth.”
Police were called about 3:30 p.m. to the home off South Church Street across from Indian Hills where they found Greer armed with a knife in the living room of Harry Brown’s home.
“I confronted Mr. Greer and instructed him to drop the knife,” Stern reported. “Mr. Greer did not acknowledge my instructions nor numerous instructions by other officers to drop the knife. A non-lethal use of force had to be used to subdue Mr. Greer by two other officers.”
Evans accused Greer of assaulting officers and people at the house and refusing to drop the weapon.
Officers Jason McGee and Mick Rea, who are part of the Special Operations Unit’s Immediate Response Team, fired three non-lethal rounds at Greer, striking him in the extremities.
“This resulted in a deadly force situation being resolved with any serious injuries to the officers or the suspects,” Evans said.
Stern reported a 12-year-old girl told officers Greer and his girlfriend, Naomi Cole, were in the home arguing and screaming at each other when her older brother came into the living room. Her father, Harry, tried to intervene.
“Greer snapped and pulled out a pocket knife,” Stern reported. “Greer lunged at all of them in the room with his knife.”
Cole and her 10-year-old son locked themselves in a bathroom and Greer knocked the girl’s father Harry Brown onto the floor and pinned him down while standing over him with the knife, the officer reported. The 12-year-old girl pushed Greer off her father who fled outside with her older brother. The girl, Cole and another men went into a bedroom where Cole and the man climbed outside while she called police. The girl stayed in the bedroom until police arrived.
Officer David Kelch reported Greer accused Harry Brown of manufacturing methamphetamine at his home. Kelch, Detective Garry Templeton and Sgt. Cary Gensemer responded to the home where they obtained consent to search.
Police found multiple hypodermic needles and rolling papers in the residence and other items used in the manufacture of illegal methamphetamine in a truck parked outside.
Suspect David Brown, 39, of Dixon Court was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and simple possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where bond was set at $35,000. A hearing was set Feb. 25 in General Sessions Court.
Officer Shawn Haney responded to the home about 6:45 p.m. to check on the welfare of the children in the home because of the methamphetamine. The mother told police her children did not need to be seen by the medical staff.
The medical staff at Middle Tennessee Medical Center checked both David Brown and Harry Brown.
The Department of Children’s Services was called to check on the children’s welfare.
