Planned Parenthood responds to proposed funding cuts

NASHVILLE - Congress is poised to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, and supporters are rallying against a vote in the Senate to do so. Republicans in the U.S. House passed a bill that would cut all federal funding to the organization.

Jeff Teague, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee, says the proposed cuts will have a profound impact on the women who rely on the organization for exams, cancer screenings, low-cost birth control, and education.

"And that it is a necessary expense, it's a necessary investment for us to make, to make sure that we are not only saving dollars in the future, but more importantly, saving and preserving the health and well-being of women."

Republicans in the House said they won't support an agency that provides abortions, but Teague says Planned Parenthood does not, and legally cannot, use federal money for abortion services. Since the House vote, more than 800,000 people nationwide have signed an open letter in support of Planned Parenthood. Right now, the Senate is debating the legislation which would include elimination of funding for the organization.

Teague says this is not a battle about whether a woman has a right to choose; it's about having access to preventive care. And without that, he says, it ultimately means higher health care costs.

"For every dollar that we spend for preventive reproductive and sexual health care services, we save four dollars in later health care services and needs."

Planned Parenthood has three clinics in Tennessee.

The cuts approved by the House are expected to be met with opposition in the Democratic-led Senate.

Planned Parenthood states that one American woman in five has been to a Planned Parenthood health center.

planned parenthood is not an evil place. Yes they assist women who want/need abortion, but they provide all aspects of womens health to women who might not have any other access.
This is another attack on women, you know many insurance co's will pay for viagra, but not birth control. How is that right. Before you condemn planned parenthood find out the truth.

publius...which Insurance companies pay for Viagra? I have BC/BS and they do not pay for any ED medicine. With a previous employer I had a different insurer; they also did not cover ED medication.

BCBS, it does depend on your plan but I have two patients with these ins co and they pay for viagra they only pay for 4 tabs a month and it is at the higher copay but they pay. The thing about all of this is your Physician should decide what medications you need not and insurance company. I take a blood pressure medication that is not on the formulary of my insurance co. The one they offer to replace does not work for me and the side effects are a problem for me. I purchase it from Canada. If you think about health care as a pie cutting it into slices pharmacy, MD, Hospital, you get three pieces if you add insurance companies the pieces are smaller. And we have seen that the quality of our health care is the worse for it. We have to start holding our government officials accountable for their actions. Both democrats, republicans, and now tea party. We need to follow the money. The banking industry has funneled huge amounts into reelection campaigns, if you don't think it alters the way these people think you are sadly mistaken. Bank of America took TARP money paid it back with interest made millions in profit this year and paid NO taxes. I would like the government to give me a sweet deal like that. I know some think I am a liberal, I am not I do not drink red or blue Kool aide.

publius-thanks, I was not aware and I was not trying to start anything, just seeking enlightenment. I too take BP and cholesterol medication,(hence the need for ED meds)and what my doctor reccomends as the best solution doesn't seem to matter to the insurance providers.
BTW I agree with you that there are major problems with the system and government official of any and all parties appear to be more influenced by the opinions of large contributors.

I am glad you see the problem, As a Nurse I am assaulted by the vulgar greed of insurance co's I call on you to remember how these companies ( banks oil and insurance) influence our elected officials The next time you go to vote. We need to hold our elected officials accountable.

Planned Parenthood murders babies. Thats wrong.

I guess it depends on your prospective. I don't think planned parenthoods main goal is abortion. I think that the majority of what Sprtman says is wrong and immoral.I think that the war in afganistan and iraq is immoral and innocent children are maimed and killed. Yet my tax dollars go to that you do not always get what you want for your tax dollars to go to.
