One Rutherford County pilot and a passenger walked away unharmed Friday when the aircraft experienced problems and landed in a field off Holly Grove Road, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The pilot and his passenger, whose names are not being released yet, flew from Smyrna Airport to Murfreesboro Airport, then took off again toward Smyrna, said Sgt. Dan Goodwin.

“Apparently on the way back to Smyrna the plane experienced engine failure or loss of power,” Goodwin said. “He put it down in a field. They actually walked away from the wreck.”

The pilot landed about 11 a.m. in a field about 600 yards back from 1781 Holly Grove Road, he said. The nose gear snapped and the left wing broke.

They used a GPS to make their way out to Rock Hill Road where they called for help.

Sheriff’s deputies, Walter Hill Volunteer Fire Department firefighters, Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Medical Services paramedics and its Special Operations Response Team and the Smyrna-Rutherford County Airport Rescue answered the call.

Smyrna Airport Executive Director John Black responded to the scene and spoke with Federal Aviation Administration officials who are expected to investigate.

“Now it’s going to be in the FAA’s hands,” Goodwin said.
