Peterson predicts 'greatest thing to happen to MTSU baseball' | MTSU, Baseball, Steve Peterson

MT head baseball coach Steve Peterson had a dream.

First he dreamed the school would build a new field for his players.

And it came true in Reese Smith Field.

Then he dreamed the team would have a championship inaugural season at its new stadium.

And the team did.

Now he has dreamed “the greatest thing to happen to MTSU baseball” will happen. But there’s a catch.

The Blue Raider fans have to break the season ticket record.

“We break the record of 973 (season tickets sold) and we’re going to be together in this … for one of the greatest things that has ever happened to us,” Peterson said.

And there’s another catch.

“If we don’t set a record, I’m going back to the weather business,” Raider II, the university’s official groundhog, told Peterson in a dream. Raider II said he will retire from helping the Blue Raiders and return to his job as Punxsutawney Phil, if the record isn’t broken.

Raider II said Peterson must produce this year to pay the groundhog back for the stadium, championship season, and even keeping football coach Rick Stockstill from moving to East Carolina University.

Peterson said the team itself will produce this year with many returning players from the 2009 Sun Belt Champion team, including the top-rated Junior pitcher Bryce Brentz.

“The big question is the infield,” he said about the team’s prospects.

The Blue Raiders will have a new starting second baseman and true freshman shortstop. Last year’s shortstop will now field third base, Peterson said.

Even with the changes, Peterson sees the team as one of the top three in the Sun Belt Conference with a good chance at garnering an invite to Omaha and the NCAA College World Series.
