Pedestrian killed near MTSU campus

Police have identified the man who was killed Friday as Middle Tennessee State University student 28-year-old David Chitwood, a junior in the College of Mass Communication.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A pedestrian has died after being hit by a dump truck Friday near the Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University.

“A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the intersection and was seriously injured,” said Sgt. Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Murfreesboro Police Department. “The pedestrian was transported to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital by Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services and later pronounced deceased.”

Evans said detectives with the Fatal Accident Crash Team are on the scene investigating the crash, which occurred at about 9 a.m. near at the intersection of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and Greenland Drive.

The identity of the person killed has not yet been released, and it is unknown whether the incident involved an MTSU student.

Officials said more information would be released as soon as it becomes available.
