A Middle Tennessee State University student who was struck by a car Tuesday night on North Rutherford Boulevard has died as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash, according to Murfreesboro police.
Officials confirmed Wednesday that Mount Juliet resident Timothy Martin died shortly after the incident, which occurred at about 8:20 p.m. near Belle Air Baptist Church in the 1300 block of North Rutherford Boulevard in Murfreesboro.
His death comes only eight days after Martin celebrated his 20th birthday.
Although detectives with the Fatal Accident Crash Team are in the process of completing their report on the crash, officials said it appears the incident was an accident.
A portion of North Rutherford Boulevard remained shut down for more than two hours after the crash while FACT Team investigators gathered evidence and collected statements from witnesses, some of whom were visibly distraught over the situation.
“After a preliminary investigation, FACT Team investigators believe Martin, now deceased, was attempting to walk his bicycle across North Rutherford Boulevard,” said Sgt. Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Murfreesboro Police Department.
“A vehicle driven by Benjamin Conley, 22, of Murfreesboro, was traveling south on North Rutherford Boulevard when (Martin) walked into the path of the vehicle,” Evans said.
First responders with the Rutherford County Emergency Medical Service arrived on the scene within moments of the crash and transported Martin to Middle Tennessee Medical Center. He was pronounced dead soon after being admitted to the emergency room.
“The crash is still under investigation at this time,” Evans said. “However, charges against the driver are not anticipated at this point.”
