The Murfreesboro Police Department has formalized an agreement with a nonprofit organization to incorporate the latest technological methods to search locally for missing and endangered people.

The Police Department has partnered with A Child is Missing, which has spearheaded efforts that have led to high-tech methods being used to search for missing children, the elderly, and those with mental and physical disabilities.

The organization uses sophisticated computer mapping systems and trained technicians who have the capacity to place alert phone calls to residents and businesses in the area where someone has gone missing.

“Upon receipt of missing person calls meeting the criteria for use of the program, the Police Department will notify the national headquarters of A Child is Missing Alert Program,” said Kyle Evans, public information officer, in a press release.

The alert program is a free service offered to law enforcement, according to the organization’s website.

The program involves a technician initiating a rapid process of information

gathering and sophisticated mapping systems to send an alert within minutes detailing the missing person’s description and other pertinent information.

“This alert message will also include a Police Department phone number for use by anyone with information relating to the missing person,” Evans said.

Phone numbers that are called by this program include listed and mobile numbers that have been made available to the organization. Residents who have unlisted numbers, as well as other types of numbers, may be added to ensure they are included in the program.

I think this non-profit organization to search for locally missing and endangered people is a great idea that I believe will help the Police Department. Not only are children kidnapped but, everybody is endangered on a daily basis. Let’s face it; We live in a dangerous world. But if we use the proper tools, we could help find these missing individuals in time.
Our technology today is advancing. We use our cellphones and smartphones all the time. They are always at our disposle. Why not use them for a source to help the community? The problem is, not everyone is around a radio or television the second a person goes missing. And timing is such a crucial element to find him or her. A simple text message with a detailed description and report could be the difference between life and death.
This free alert system Murfreesboro Police Department is trying to put together will be extremley beneficial to the public. I think this is a great idea and could possibly save someone's life. A missing person could be within feet of you and not even be aware of it. But with more technology advances we can be more aware of our surroundings.
