One person killed in head-on collision from Monday wreck

Alcohol may have been involved in a head-on crash that killed one person and injured six others in Rutherford County on Monday.

Roland B. King, 53, was killed when he attempted to pass another car, striking an SUV head on. The SUV Maria Tarpley, 18, from Smyrna who was transported to the hospital after the wreck with serious injuries.

The two-car collision happened just before noon in the 7200 block of Old Nashville Highway near Amanda Way in Murfreesboro. One of the cars had six people inside.

An official with Rutherford County Emergency Management said one person died at the scene. Two others were taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. At least one of those was said to be in critical condition.
Four others were taken to the hospital by ambulance. No identities were released.

Roland, the driver of the car that struck the teen, was believed to be drinking alcohol prior to the wreck. Although he was killed, blood tests are still being conducted.
