One of two burglary suspects nabbed after high speed chase | BURGLARY

Zack Malone
Burglary charges may be pending against two men accused of stealing $2,500 worth of jewelry from a home and leading police on a high-speed chase Wednesday off Sulphur Springs Road, sheriff’s deputies reported.

Suspect Zack Malone, 23, of Nashville was apprehended by sheriff’s deputies and charged with resisting arrest and assault.

Companion Bruce A. Eggleston Jr., 25, of Joelton is sought for questioning by Detectives Ralph Mayercik and Steve Kohler. Eggleston was last seen fleeing into woods near the Stones River off Thompson Lane in Murfreesboro after ditching his pickup truck and Malone.

Deputy Gregg Speck reported victim Daniel Layhew reported he slept about 10 a.m. at his Buckeye Bottom Road home when awakened by a horn. He glanced outside to see two men inside a Dodge Dakota truck. Layhew dressed and walked downstairs where he encountered a man holding his mother, Cynthia’s, jewelry boxes. He called 911.

Deputy Trey Nunley spotted the Dakota truck on state Route 840 near the Sulphur Springs Road exit and activated his lights and siren as he tried to get the truck to stop.

Nunley and other deputies pursued the truck on Sulphur Springs Road and Buckeye Bottom Road to Shacklett Road where the driver traveled through a field and crashed through a wooden fence owned by Glendon Bruce Britton.

Another deputy got behind the truck near the Tri-Way market onto Sulphur Springs Road, traveling 90 to 100 mph, Nunley reported. Deputies backed off during sharp curves on Sulphur Springs Road and lost the truck. They found him again on Leanna Road near Thompson Lane.

“The event continued until the suspect vehicle stopped in a field at the dead end of Albany Court and a foot chase began,” Nunley reported. “One suspect, a Zachary Thomas Malone, 23, was quickly apprehended while the other fled into the neighborhood.”

Eggleston was identified the driver and faces charges of evading arrest, reckless driving and vandalism, Nunley reported.

During the foot pursuit, Deputy Jay Jones located the 6-foot-8 Malone in a driveway on Cornwell drive.

“I ordered him at gunpoint to lay on the ground on his stomach,” Jones reported. “Mr. Malone complied. As I was attempting to handcuff him, he began to resist and grabbed my right leg and attempted to drag me to the ground. I escaped his grasp and he stood up and begged me not to shoot him.”

Malone ran about 50 to 60 yards until Deputy Brad Harwell ordered him down at gunpoint.

Jones charged Malone with assault and resisting arrest. His hearing is set Dec. 9 in General Sessions Court.
