Tennessee’s best youth track and field athletes battled each other and the hot weather Saturday, June 19 during the Hershey’s Track and Field state meet at Riverdale. Several Murfreesboro participates did well, including four state champions in five events.

Noah Delk dominated the long distance events in the (13/14) boys division with victories in the 800 and 1,600 meter race. In the 800, Delk had no challengers, so it was a race between him and the clock. He finished with a time of 2:37.92. His second win came against another runner with a time of 6:33.64.

In the same age division, Whitney Tesi won the girls 100 meter dash in a time of 13.50. She was runner-up in the 200. Speaking of the 200, Garrett Coleman became the state champion in the (9/10) boys division. He also finished third in the 400.

“It means I did well,” Coleman said after receiving his state title. He added he was excited about his win.

The final Murfreesboro winner was Donovan Harkins in the 800 meter run in the boys (11/12) division.

The athletes also dealt with the hot and humid temperatures that reached triple digits.

Unlike the local and district meets that were held a few weeks ago, time and distance are key in determining who will be Tennessee’s representatives in the North American Final that will be held in August at Hershey, Penn.

Each state gets at least five automatic bids, and they are determined by comparing the times and distances from each event in every state meet.

Only winners of their event are put into consideration for those spots for the North American Final. For example, only the four winners from this area will be eligible to advance to the final meet. Those qualifiers will not be finalized until early July, when all the state meets are completed.
