An off-duty Murfreesboro Police officer suffered cracked ribs and a knot on his head during an unprovoked attack Friday at the apartment complex where he lives and provides security, supervisors said.

Officer Chance York was treated for his injuries at Middle Tennessee Medical Center and later released, Capt. Carl Watkins said.

York, wearing his uniform pants and boots and a black T-shirt, checked his mail about 12:45 p.m. at Chelsea Place Apartment. While returning to his department, two men approached him and called to him.

“They assaulted him with what appeared to be a metal pipe,” Watkins said. “It looked like a boot print on his side like he (the attacker) stomped him.”

York lost consciousness and awoke to see the men running away. One man was described as a bald black man about 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-3 and weighing about 200 pounds. He wore a blue shirt and black pants. The second man was in his 20s to 30s. They ran toward Jessica Street.

He didn't know the attackers. Police saturated the area but did not locate the suspects. People who have information are asked to call Detective Chris Ashley at 893-2717.
