Bobby Joe “Butch” Wilson, Jr.

Bobby Joe “Butch” Wilson, Jr., of LaVergne, Tennessee, died suddenly Wednesday, November 23, 2020 from complications of COVID-19. He was a dedicated and devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend to those who knew and loved him.

Butch was born January 15, 1968 in Nashville to Bobby and Alice (Mason) Wilson. He was their only son and his sisters are still convinced that he was the favorite child. He lived with his family in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee before moving to Dickson in 1976.

He made a profession of faith before the congregation of Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church when he was 11 years old and his loved ones are fortunate to know that his faith never wavered throughout his life.

Butch was a proud 1986 graduate of DCHS, where he was known for his sense of humor and ability to charm his way out of trouble. He attended both Nashville State Community College and Austin Peay State University and did a brief stint in the United States Army Reserves.

Butch held a number of jobs as a young man – mowing lawns, hauling hay, and working at Dairy Queen, Opryland, Dominos, Airborne Express, and the Dickson County Sheriff’s Department – before settling on a career at Cedar Grove Residential Treatment Facility in Murfreesboro. He worked with the at risk youth there for almost 30 years.

Although not an athlete himself, he developed a love of sports early in his life. He was fiercely loyal to the Vanderbilt Commodores, thus learning heartbreak and disappointment early in life. Butch was also a die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs and traveled to Chicago frequently for games. He was an early PSL and season ticket holder for the Tennessee Titans, but his greatest love was hockey and the Nashville Predators. Butch was also a volunteer assistant coach for a girls’ travel basketball team, Murfreesboro Lady Stars. He loved coaching his girls and helped coach them all the way to the national championships, where they made it to the finals twice.

Butch made friends easily and had many life-long friendships. His closest friends were those he made from his time at Opryland and Cedar Grove. Butch was a private person and hated having a fuss made over him. Anytime he was asked what type of gift he would like for a special occasion, he would always say “I’m a simple man. My wants are none and my needs are few.” This statement would cause a few eye rolls from his sisters, then he would eventually say something silly, like coat hangers or Tupperware.

The loss of our only brother will leave a deep, wide chasm in our family. We grieve him now. We will continue to miss him, and we will love him always.

Preceding Butch in death are his father Bobby Joe Wilson, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Willie and Katherine (Hagan) Wilson; maternal grandparents, Carl Mason and Sue Ann (Geer) Mason Pemberton; his father’s twin brother, Jerry Wilson; maternal aunt Betty Neely; cousin Tommy Wilson; and his beloved Chow Chow, Norman.

Left to grieve his loss are his mother Alice Mason Wilson of Nashville; his sisters, Melissa Wilson, Suzy (Mark) Rolman, and Allison Wilson, all of Dickson; his beloved nieces and nephews, Lexie Wilson, Mary Rolman, Mason Rolman, and Benjamin Rolman, all of Dickson; uncles, Blaine (Carolyn) Mason of Richmond, VA, Pete (Cherry) Mason of Brentwood, TN, Mike (Virginia) Mason of Sparta, TN, and Scott Mason of Columbus, OH; friends, Glenn Greene, Jimmy Bussell, and Tim Smith, all of Murfreesboro; and many, many cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held December 8, 10 am until 2 pm at Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson with services directly after. For those who cannot attend due to travel restrictions and COVID-19 protocols, the service will be live streamed on Taylor Funeral Home’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4An0c7r6y8&feature=youtu.be. As he has been cremated, there will be no internment at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that people donate to the girls’ basketball team, Murfreesboro Lady Stars, c/o Shawn Brown 933 Aldwych Ct. Antioch, TN 37013.

*** Please be aware that masks are required for those wishing to visit with the family and/or attend the service. It would do a grave disservice to the memory of Butch if this is not honored. #IfYouCareAMaskYouWillWear
