An Ensworth weakness in its kicking game led the homestanding Tigers to a 22-20 overtime won over defending state champion Oakland in a televised game with that Rivals.com tabbed the game of the week nationally.

Ensworth rallied late in regulation time and won the game in the extra play when a pitchout on an option netted two points.

The Tigers went for the two after poor kicks after its first regulation touchdown and on a field goal try.

With both teams scoring in two plays on their overtime first-and-goal series from the 10-yard line, Oakland suffered the loss when a Christian Adams pass for the double PAT was just short.

The Patriots, who lost only one game last fall, return to action Friday night, traveling to Independence, a 15-14 winner over Siegel Friday.

Three turnovers in the first half left the Patriots running only a handful of plays and netting just 7 yards in total offense.

Heroic effort by the Oakland defense kept the Pats in the game, giving up yardage to the homestanding Tigers but only six points.

Oakland, recovering a muffed kickoff inside the Ensworth 40 to open the second half, went to the offense that proved so successful in its championship run last fall – smashmouth football.

Abandoning a two-wideout formation, the Patriots took advantage of the turnover with a two tight end, full-house backfield formation and just pounded the Tigers.

The Pats just crunched down the field with T. Mayberry accounting for most of the yardage, but QB Christian Adams coming up with a key gain on third and three with a counter bootleg to the Ensworth six.

Two plays later Mayberry turned into a rocket and flew across the line of scrimmage into the end zone. Trevor Hornsby’s kick put the Patriots up 7-6.

Next their next series after an Ensworth three-and-out, Oakland went back to two wideouts, spreading the Tiger defense. Adams threw for one first down between big runs by Mayberry and Zack Barnes.

Mayberry capped the drive when hit a hole at left guard, cut right and motored 18 yards to the end zone, netting Oakland a 14-6 with 1:42 left in the third.

Neither team seriously threatened until less than four minutes were left when Jacob Carter ripped off a long punt return to set Ensworth up at the Oakland 20.

Two players later, 3:41, Cody Tollison flipped a wide receiver screen pass to Cory Sacks who slipped past one defender and zipped in for the TD. Orleans Opoku-Darkwa bullied his way in for two points, tying the score and setting up the eventual overtime.

Getting the ball first, Ensworth scored in two plays with  Darkwa going in from the two. Marcus McAlbin sprinted to the right corner of the end zone on a pitch for the deciding two-point conversion.

Oakland also scored in two plays, two rushes by Mayberry with dove in from the two, but, under pressure, Adams’ pass was just short of his receiver at the goal line.
