Even the extremely cold temperatures couldn’t stop a group of construction and masonry students from Oakland High School. During the past three weeks, they have been putting their class time to good use, building two homes for Habitat for Humanity.

Along with learning how to read blueprints, designing and building walls in class, the students have taken on the task of erecting all the walls for the two houses.

“The students have really taken this project to heart,” says class instructor Eddie Carroll. “On Wednesday, Jan. 13, 17 students even went out to the job site near MTSU and erected the walls they had built during their class time,” Carroll said.

“A smaller group went out on the following Saturday and helped with construction of the roof and front porch. I am very proud of their efforts and interests in this project,” Carroll said.

The students have now finished building the walls for a second house and may work on other Habitat homes in the future.

Oakland really is the exact opposite of the reputation it holds. What a great story filled with great kids!

Congrats to the kids at Oakland I am a RHS alumn and we had a class called building trades, taught by Mr. Sammie Long!!! It was one of the most rewarding classes there! We built a home from the ground up! It was our grade we learned everything from framing to carpet laying! I was the only girl in the class so I got a lot of lip, but he made us pull our own! To this day I can still fix my own things at home thanks to Mr. Long. Way to go kids it is a self gratification to see a home you helped build as a teen!
