After 20 years in what seems more a blink of the eye, the planning for the Oakland Class of 1989 Reunion has begun in earnest.
The dates for the weekend of events are Sept. 18 and 19, 2009. This weekend was chosen to coincide with what was a highlight 25 ago, the Oakland-Riverdale game.
“Twenty-years ago there were only two high schools in Murfreesboro , so this was the cross-town rivalry game of the year,” Joe Peebles, senior class president and former Oakland quarterback, said. “Neither high school had a football stadium, so we played at MTSU. This time we get to watch the game at the Oakland stadium, which makes this a great time for the reunion.”
The reunion kicks off with a tailgate party prior to the Friday night game. Afterwards a mixer will be held at the Blue Rooster downtown. On Saturday a golf tournament will be held at Blueberry Ridge followed by a picnic at Barfield Park. A banquet at Stones River Country Club will close the reunion weekend on Saturday night.
“We wanted to have a weekend that offered events that appeal to everyone,” Peebles said. “We still need contact information for over 100 of our classmates, so we have established an email account to help people get in touch.”
To make sure your name is included in the mailings or to volunteer to help with the reunion, email the committee at ohs89reunion@hotmail.com or join our Face Book page named “Oakland Eightynine”.
