From the National Weather Service:
The outbreak in Middle Tennessee during the late night hours of Jan. 30, 2013, was the second largest outbreak on record with a total of 22 tornadoes over a three hour span that started around 2 a.m. and ended around 5:30 a.m.
Fortunately no one was killed by the tornadoes. This outbreak is only surpassed by the infamous April 3, 1974 super outbreak that produced 24 tornadoes in Middle Tennessee alone, with 55 tornadoes across Tennessee, killing 46 people.
There were a total of 23 tornadoes during the month of January 2013. This is the most ever documented in the month of January. Previously the most tornadoes in January were 18 in 1999 with nine fatalities. |
