Melanie Loupe’s second-grade class At Scales Elementary left a legacy for next year’s class with a vegetable garden.
Loupe’s students planted a vegetable garden Thursday and went out to admire their handwork Friday, the last day of school.
“They had an awesome, awesome time,” Loupe said, explaining the students dug trenches, fertilized the ground and planted the plants themselves.
Her next batch of second graders will tend the plot of tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow squash and green peppers when the year-round school resumes July 15.
Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City schools ended another year with a half-day Friday morning.
Students will return to the classroom Aug. 12 in both systems.
