UPDATE: Due to the probable inclement weather Night Watch is moving inside First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Spring and College Streets.
Hours are 10:30 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 31.
Great way to bring in the NEW YEAR – Community Praise Concert and Prayer Celebration With the challenging year of 2009 ebbing, Murfreesboro residents will issue “a declaration of the plans of God for 2010 for this city” during the annual Night Watch Celebration on New Year’s Eve, an organizer said.
The event will begin at 10:30 p.m. with a performance by the Blue Chips Praise Band from Celebrate Recovery at Belle-Aire with special guest musicians and singers from other praise and worship bands, said organizer Gloria Christy.
Mike Courtney from Branches Recovery Center will be the master of ceremonies. A select group of leaders and pastors will share “a brief prayer focused on a specific area impacting the peace and prosperity of our community.”
“What an appropriate place for us to pray God’s will and vision for 2010 than on the lawn of the Courthouse where a physical battle had occurred in the Civil War,” Christy said, explaining watchmen on the Courthouse roof alerted residents about the advancing Union Army Dec. 31, 1862 through Jan. 2, 1863 during the Battle of Murfreesboro or Stones River.
“Here we are again, praying as God’s vigilant sentinels with the assignment to declare God’s will and vision for Rutherford County in 2010,” Christy said. “We are welcoming, inviting, and encouraging the community to come celebrate and become faithful watchmen.”
The event will end at midnight with the ringing of the downtown chimes and church bells at midnight.
“As all the Church Bells around the Square begin to ring, we hope that others in surrounding neighborhood will join us in creating a sweeping city-wide celebration by coming out of their homes to ring bells, bang on a pot, or sound their car horn,” Christy said.
“We intend this groundswell of jubilant noise to represent an affirmation that as people of faith, we are not alone, we have reason to hope and share our Trust in God with one another through the coming year,” she added.
Everyone is asked to bring a bell or other cheerful noisemakers to welcome 2010 and flashlights for everyone in the family or group to shine lights into the sky to “symbolize a renewal of hope and commitment to working together to bring a better quality of life for everyone who lives in our area.”
The event is free but people are asked to bring a can of food or some other non-perishable household supplies that will be donated to Feed America First. Contributions to Feed America First by tangible supplies, food or cash or check will be appreciated by all those this local agency serves.
For more information, contact Night Watch from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at 896-6288 or email tomchristy@communitycrossroads.com if you’d like to play with the band, volunteer to serve hot beverages or help in any way.
