Our community was shocked last week to learn of the unexpected and untimely death of an important community leader and fine man.
Lon Nuell suffered a massive stroke while recovering from hip replacement surgery.
Dr. Nuell was an MTSU arts professor and a member of the Murfreesboro School System board. In both capacities he distinguished himself for his intellect, his ability to listen and to reason and his ability to deal with people as people.
A man of Jewish faith, Dr. Nuell served this community well and with courage on several occasions when we may have rushed to judgment in defense of matters of faith and crossed the line between the separation of church and state.
When it would have been easy and popular to remain quiet on such issues as religious Christmas decorations on public property, Dr. Nuell had the fortitude to stand what he felt was right, and indeed what our Constitution promises.
He always expressed his protest with dignity, respect and reason.
Dr. Nuell also was an enduring champion of Holocaust education in our community and state.
Dr. Nuell will be missed as a superb educator, a fine man and a hero of conviction.
