Officer loses police powers over traffic stop | Murfreesboro, Police, MPD, Crime, Anthony Whitehead

Anthony Whitehead
A Murfreesboro Police officer lost his police powers Wednesday after he allegedly cursed a truck driver who pulled his rig out rather than move over for the officer’s siren Feb. 29 onto South Church Street.

Chief Glenn Chrisman ordered Officer Anthony Whitehead to be relieved of duty. Under the order, Whitehead was ordered not to carry a firearm on city property, carry a badge, wear a uniform or work in a law enforcement capacity while he’s under investigation by Internal Affairs.

A videotape taken from Whitehead’s in-car camera showed Whitehead, with the sound of his siren, responding to a crash at 11:04 a.m. on South Church Street. As he approached the Pilot station near Interstate 24, a flat bed truck hauling a commercial farm tractor, pulled onto the street in the right lane. Whitehead drove in the left lane.

Whitehead pulled in front of the truck on the I-24 bridge. Out of the camera view but on the audio, Whitehead ordered the driver out of the car and onto the ground in an apparent felony stop. Officers routinely draw their weapons during a felony stop.

“You pulled out dead-a—in front of me, dead a—in front of me,” Whitehead said, then ordered the truck driver to stand up.

The truck driver told Whitehead, “I didn’t see you. I came out of the Pilot.”

Whitehead told the driver he wouldn’t “get out of my d--- way.” The officer said the city judge will kick out the citation and the county (judge) won’t hear a failure to yield citation. Despite his comments, Whitehead wrote the driver a citation for failure to yield.

On the audiotape, Whitehead said the driver cut over in front of him.

“I don’t see how he couldn’t see me,” Whitehead said.

Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said he couldn’t comment on the tape or case while Whitehead is under investigation.

Whitehead’s personnel file showed he received numerous disciplinary action and suspended days off without pay for missing court, being late to work and abusing the city’s sick leave.

He received numerous citations for his work in helping arrest burglary suspects and helping citizens.

Whitehead joined the police department eight years ago.

These truck drivers think they own the road. Routinely, they pull out in front of drivers on S. Church St. (both at the truck stop by I-24 and at the BP near Rutherford Blvd.) Just because they are bigger than all the other cars on the road doesn't mean they can block traffic because they are tired of waiting on this crappy traffic we have here in the Boro. I'm not saying the officer was right or wrong ( I wasn't there). I'm just wondering how the truck driver didn't see the officer's blue lights and hear his siren. Doesn't the driver sit high enough to have an advantage over the average driver?

Why aren't these citations being upheld? Does the "move over law" not apply to truck drivers too? As for the cops language, I have a few four letter words that I use when some idiot pulls out in front of me and I have to slam on my brakes to keep from rear ending them. Seems to me that both parties need disipline, not just the cop.

piggum, even if you weren't there, the cop used bad words. he should have just continued on to his call. but NOOOO. he had to get out, cuss, and bully another person, who was also wrong. see, you pigs, phuzz, phlatphoots, whatever, all stick together. you cops are the first to ask us citizens to not use foul langage when you stop us, but you know what, what's good for the phuzz is good for us.

He cursed at the truck driver big deal, had the idiot pulled out in front me I would have had said a lot worse than a**.. Although it did get taken a little far, people that do not pay attention or think you'll stop & so its fine to pull out aren't exactly innocent either.

Over the last few years, I have noticed most drivers have forgotten that when an emergency vehicle is approaching to yield to the RIGHT, not stop in the left lane or turn on your signal and make a left turn or do nothing but look in the rear view mirror and not get out of the way. When a driver fails to yield it endangers not only themselves and the people in the emergency vehicle, but other citizens traveling on that roadway. As to Officer Whitehead, the times I have seen him at work, he has always been a professional and caring officer. And keptboy, your dislike of law enforcement shines thru again, but I would guess your Pinto doesn't go fast enough to break the speed limit.

lawmutt, yes, i have a disdain for law "enforcement" for such reasons as this idiot. she apparently thinks she IS the law. numerous reprimands? hey, i'm all for freedom of speech and the use of profanity. but when you girls try to tell me and others to watch OUR language in your presence, nope. sorry. no law against it, so deal with it. i don't drive a pinto, i do my part for the environment, i drive an 4x4 SUV. catch me if you can.

Piggum and lawpup, if you spent more time upholding the law instead of defending bad cops we would all be better off. It appears there is a generic lack of leadership in the big pig pen by the fact that the piglets are out of control. In the last week three pigs exercised their pig power which resulted in one totally incident person injured in a car/motorcycle accident, one bull pig’s son was pulled for speeding and got off scott free, and one lost his power to carry a firearm on city property, carry a badge, wear a uniform or work in a law enforcement. Lawpup must not go down the same street I do because, when the lights and sirens go on “most” people do move to the right and try to stop. Lights and sirens tend to create confusion among some driver but, differently not “most”.

and i guess if you can't take the heat that comes with being the phuzz, find another career. i don't mind being kept, nor being called boy for that matter. names don't bother me, nothing you say does. apparently though, what i say about your girls in law enforcement must hit home, otherwise, it wouldn't bother you like it does. :) typical of dogs though, all bark, no bite.

"I'm not saying the officer was right or wrong"....pay attention folks. I didn't take the officer's side. I clearly stated my dislike of the truckers on S. Church St. that rule the road because they can.
Keptman, I never said anything about foul language. I use it myself on occassion. It is your First Amendment right...you're right. Until in causes a disturbance or prohibits someone else from countinuing with their normal activities.
Tuffgirl, brush up on your facts...how in the world are you going to say the trooper is responsible for a crash caused my an idiot that refused to stop for him? The kid is responsible for hitting the "incident" (hehe) person, not the trooper. Besides, the trooper terminated the pursuit. You have no idea why the chief's son was pulled over because it hasn't been released. And if you don't know the facts of the case, you can't speak intelligently about it. Finally, Ofc. Whitehead didn't lose his power to carry a firearm on city property. He was decommissioned. They pulled his badge and his gun. It says nothing about carrying a weapon on city property.
My request to both of you is this....sign up for the citizen's police academy or leadership rutherford. See what these people do for a living before you judge. It's not like it is on "Cops" or what you read in the DNJ.

Correction, the article did say he couldn't carry a gun on city property. I stand corrected.
March 07, 2008 at 6:00pm
What about the injured motorist who was waiting for this "professional" to both protect and to serve him/her?
This is despicable behavior from a hideously ugly person (both inside and out).
In his defense, if I had to look at that face in the mirror every day, I'd probably be ready to take it out on the world as well
Funny how all these cop-types on here saying bad things about the media yet, at the same time, these boards are overflowing with them and their wives, etc.................

watch this link and pay close attention to the repeated claims by this "Man's" lawyer that he did nothing wrong.

"This is but one reason why nobody likes you people"
-KeyserSoze
Wow. With that statement one is to believe Keyser has a total disrespect for law enforcement and a passionate dislike for anyone working in that field. I ,however, do not appreciate being included. I've found as long as one is not acting as a fool, one is not treated as a fool. I appreciate my local law enforcement officers and the job they do. I'm sure there is more than one side to Officer Whitehead's story. After over eight years employment this seem out of character.

Keyser:
I have bit my tounge long enough. I love reading these blogs that the citizen write but when one insults a friend of mine, who you dont even know, i have to voice my opinion. I am not hear to defend Officer Whitehead's actions but his character. This man puts on his uniform everyday to serve and protect you!!!! You may not agree with what he did but you have no right to attack his character.
I could write for days about your character just on the way you voice your thoughts on this web-site EVERYDAY. Which im sure your employer does not know you are doing instead of WORKING.. BUT i do not know you SO i am not going to judge you. Instead give you this tid-bit. If this officer was your friend , family, or spouse how would you feel about the words YOU spoke about him(with not ever knowing the man)!
The "injured motorist" awaiting his arrival.. I can tell you that motorist got the assistance they needed because if you listen to the in-car camera you can hear officer Whitehead radio to dispatch that he was stopping the semi.
Keyser, take pigintn's request to heart and sing up to ride with a police officer just for one night and see the things that occur in murfreesboro on a nightly basis. I promise you it will be a eye opening experience?? Are you up for it? If so I can assist you, the ball is your court Keyser?

While the alleged cussing was inappropriate and unprofessional, I'm more concerned that the officer allegedly unholstered his weapon while making the stop. Did he believe the truck driver might be violent or otherwise dangerous? Otherwise, the combination of the cussing, turning a traffic stop into a felony stop and then having to have a supervisor called in to settle things down might smack of a need for some anger-management classes. (I'd suggest those classes for ALL of us who drive in Rutherford County, by the way, myself included.)
March 10, 2008 at 6:00pm
have bit? no, it would be I have bitten. again, another cop sticking up for a bum of a cop who has had as listed here, NUMEROUS disciplinary actions AND suspensions. wow, what a cop. missed court and abuses the sick leave. there's your ideal worker. apparenlty he does NOT put on his uniform every day since he's abusing sick time. ah well. no work uh, what's it called, oh yeah, no work ETHIC. just like all you other cops.
March 11, 2008 at 6:00pm

Whitehead is not totally innocent in this whole thing. What little information we do have about officer Whitehead is not all good. Maybe it's not enough information to figure out what type of person he really is, but anger management and other disciplinary action certainly does not indicate he's a model officer either! The idiot truck driver was probably talking on his cellphone while driving, which I know is prohibited. I saw one just the other day doing the same thing, as he was turning onto Memorial Blvd. coming at 4 lanes of traffic. I was in the lane closest to him. The chances these tractor trailer drivers take are unbelievable!

You people are a joke. I was not there and do not know the whole story on exactly what happend, but any of you that run your mouth I guess you should call the garbage man the next time someone is robbing you, raping your kid, or drunk driving while your kids are in the vehicle with you. Im not saying he was not wrong anywhere but you people are out of your mind, you need to remember weither it be County Deputies, or City Officers, all Law Officers are all human. We put our pants on the same way you do. Think about that the next time you start to slander someone that risks theirs to save yours Keptman!
March 12, 2008 at 6:00pm
i've been on the end of needing you pigs, phuzz, whatever. so i speak from the experiences i've had with you girls. you can't solve a crime if it fell in your lap. you know what, the garbage man stands more of a chance of finding my stuff that was stolen out of my vehicle than you do. that case is still open because you won't do anything. you guys showed up and blamed me for being robbed. what idiots. you blame the owner thinking if you make them feel bad about it, they may actually think it was THEIR fault and hence relieve you of the burden of actually finding the criminal. you guys wouldn't even take prints that were all over my FRESHLY CLEANED WINDOWS because, this was even more stupid, A GUN WASN'T STOLEN from my truck. I'm not a redneck so i don't carry a gun. You girls also told me that THERE IS NOTHING TO SAY THESE PRINTS ARE IN THE SYSTEM. how do you know unless you take them? you are lazy worthless people. so you know what, I will call the trash man. he'll be there quicker and more willing to solve the crime than you. even better still, most of the time, i'm home, so i'll handle the robber on my own if i'm there. this is why more and more people are taking the law into their own hands. as for raping my kid, if i'm there to see it, you won't be the first person i call. you get my drift? there was nothing slanderous in my posts. the truth hurts, don't it? (imp. eng. on purpose)
