SR99/I24 now open
The Interstate-24 and State Route-99 interchange is officially opened to traffic.

Local and state dignitaries cut the ribbon Monday morning to open the new interchange and complete the widening project on I-24 between highways 96 and 231.

The project, which began in late spring to early summer 2006, was scheduled for completion in June 2008.

“We’re here in Rutherford County to celebrate the early completion of this project …” Tennessee Department of Transportation Director Gerald Nicely said. “I-24 provides a vital link not only to Nashville and Murfreesboro but also to Chattanooga and Atlanta.”

Transportation Committee Chairman and State Sen. Jim Tracy also addressed the crowd.

“This is a tremendous asset to this part of the state,” he said.

More than 66,000 cars travel the stretch of interstate everyday. The widening project and new interchange were built in order to relieve traffic woes in Murfreesboro.

“This will definitely ease the stress on Old Fort Parkway … and 231,” State Sen. Bill Ketron said.

State Rep. Curt Cobb addressed the safety advantages of the widened interstate and new interchange.

“This project will save some lives,” Cobb said.

He also commented the interchange would be a welcome addition for “that major traffic from Eagleville.”

gloria2deo: this new exit gives better access to anyone who headed in or out of the Cason Lane area.

Should be good for about two weeks. lol The only way to stop gridlock is to stop the over building of the City. But since pretty much everyone in the photo gets money from developers, that wont happen anytime soon.

Amos, there were some cosmetic issues.

Cosmetic issues?? I don't see but one lady in the picture and I can't see her make-up! :)

I took that exit today coming from the southeast on 24. It was nice, but the red lights between the exit and Old Fort Parkway will keep it from being much of a timesaver coming toward downtown Murfreesboro. For folks in the other direction it should be great.

cosmetic issues with the exit - trash, rock, concrete, last minute painting, etc., had to be finished - like buying a new house, some items were caught not complete in the "walk thru"

I am pretty sure the opening isn't that big of a issue because I drive past this spot every day at 6 in the morning and I can't count the times that people were already using it as a exit and on ramp before it was ever open. How hard is it to drive around the orange barrel on the ramp?I called once to complain to the city because I almost got sideswiped by one of these guys and the city said there was supposed to be cops sitting there to prevent this.Guess who I never saw.The cops. They are to busy getting the mothers speeding on Cason Lane and River Rock Blvd.I guess they figure if they stay on that side of town they can avoid all the shootings on the other side of town.

Hey, not really a fair comment Singhey616 about the policemen, but the people who were using the ramp before it was even open? Oh yeah....... BIG idiots!
