Missing woman's cell phone found
Email Print
A cell telephone belonging to a missing woman was located Tuesday night on Barfield-Crescent Road near Barfield Baptist Church, the Murfreesboro Police spokesman said.

Locating the telephone eliminates police using the device to track the whereabouts of missing Marsiline Smith, 69, of Village Green, said spokesman Kyle Evans.

"She doesn't have the cell phone on her," Evans said. "It definitely eliminates the possibility of using the phone to locate her. It adds extra questions to the investigation."

Smith, who lives behind Kroger's on South Church Street, was reported missing last Thursday. Her Lincoln Navigator was located Friday at Wal-Mart on Rutherford Boulevard. Her husband, Palmer, told police his wife left about 1:30 p.m. Thursday to shop. Wal-Mart video cameras showed a man parked her car about 2:30 p.m., retrieved a bicycle from the back and pedaled away.

In a press conferecne Tuesday, Smith's daughter Lee Ann Barnes asked people who know information about the bicyclist to call police.

Evans said no other evidence was found on Barfield-Crescent Road to help in the search for Smith.

"We're not going to stop until we get answers in this case," Evans said.

People who have information may call the Criminal Investigations Division at 893-2717.

Barnes said Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopters searched the Barfield area while police officers searched the ground for Smith.

Evans said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents and the U.S. Marshals helped in the search Tuesday.

"We want to extend our gratitude for their assistance in this investigation," Evans said.

I don't remember hearing...did they even try to use her cellphone prior to it being found or even checking a record of her outgoing calls. The article leads one to believe differently....Locating the telephone eliminates police using the device to track the whereabouts of missing Marsiline Smith.
It just seems something is being left out regarding what the public is being told...I know law enforcement cannot make public all they have but when they are asking for "assistance" it would help if all the facts were available. My heart and prayers go out to the family may God be with them all and may "whomever" is responsible be found and made to pay to the full extent of the law.

initial report indicated that they were tracking her phone if i remember correctly

They had to wait 24 hours, according to TN Law, before law enforcement could use tracking on the cell phone as she was not legally missing until 24 hours. Some states 48 hours.

Well if the police didn't tell the press they were going to use the cell phone, maybe the "bike man" would have NOT known to throw it away out in the country. I doubt the location of the phone is anywhere near the culprits home. Today they release to much information which aids criminals and terorist. STOP IT! DONT PUT IT TO PRESS! PLEASE!

I feel badly for this woman and her family. Have they called on the residents of the Barfield and Church St. areas to search? So many acres of woods alone :( This bike man is not going to come forward unless the police and the family will guarantee he will not be arrested for theft. I have a feeling the man, saw the opportunity to take the vehicle and it's contents. Perhaps the keys were left in it or it was left running. No one indicated if the bike belonged to the victim?

While it's there's a time frame for reporting and searching for missing adults, I believe the law enforcement will act sooner when a person has a medical condition.

To the family. I am praying along with many others for her safe return.

I think the location of the found phone indicates a more approximate location of where whatever happened happened. I think it happened in her neighborhood...

I dunno. I'm the same way. If I have no choice but to speak to a group or face a camera, I can find a focal point and stay with it. But otherwise distracted by thoughts, I wouldn't be looking at cameras, either. I hate the things.

As time goes on I'm having some serious ??? about the husband. Here's why:
Report her missing just a few hrs. she left the house,he only spoke to the news cameras 1 time that was last Thurs.and he didn't seem to "sadden"ever since then when the cameras come around he can't face the camera he is looking down or his face is turned.
His family members esp. the daughter is doing all the work where has he been for the public to see and understand what he is going thru?
Too many things are not adding up.I hope they do find her and she is safe

Got to agree, this definitely sounds like something that was planned, especially with someone returning the car and riding off on a bicycle! I haven't seen anything on the husband much at all. This case is going to be solved, I just have a strong feeling about it. I wish the person who may know who this man on the bicycle is would contact the authorities. I know whoever this man is, he's got to be pretty miserable right about now, and I hope he is!
