Employment in the Murfreesboro area is diverse, at least one reason this community has prospered in recent years.

Obviously, the housing industry in its many functions, retail trade and medical services are huge employers in our community.

But, the biggest single employers are led by two governmental agencies, county government and MTSU whose overall economic impact is estimated to exceed $1 billion annually.

The following are the single largest employers in Murfreesboro:

1. Rutherford County Government is based out of the Courthouse in the center of the Public Square. The county currently employs 3,350. Phone: 898-7745

2. Middle Tennessee State University is located at 1301 East Main St. The largest undergraduate university in the state, MTSU employs 1,700. Phone: 893-2300.

3. State Farm Operations Center is located at 2500 Memorial Blvd. The company currently employs 1,450 people. Phone: 898-6000

4. Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Medical Center is located at 3400 Lebanon Road. The medical center currently employs 1,411. Phone: 893-1360.

5. Middle Tennessee Medical Center is located at 400 N. Highland Ave. MTMC employs 1,300 people. Phone: 849-4100

6. Verizon Wireless Call Center is located at 300 River Rock Blvd. The wireless device purchasing and replacement call center currently employs 1,083. Phone: 372-2000.

7. City of Murfreesboro is based out of Murfreesboro City Hall at 111 W. Vine St. The city government employs 827 full time and 234 part time employees. Phone: 893-5210.

8. General Mills/Pillsbury is located at 200 Butler Drive. The company that manufactures a variety of food products employs 750. Phone: 890-9900

9, Johnson Controls, Inc., is located at 1501 Molloy Lane. A global leader in producing automotive interiors, Johnson employs 750. Phone 890-5559.

10, MAHLE Tennex is located at 906 Butler Drive. The manufacturer of filters and filter systems employs 650. Phone: 895-5572.

11. Lewis Brother Bakeries is located at 847 Scott Street. The bakery produces Healthy Life and Bunny Bread products and employ 525. Phone: 893-6041.

4 out of the top 10 are government related (1,2,4 & 7). They are diverse as far as type of jobs, but not diverse as far as source of revenue - taxes.

We all should be alarmed, especially with the explosive growth of government.

It should come as no surprise that elected officials for the City of Murfreesboro are attempting to annex so many property owners. Revenue!

Councilman McFarland stated that everyone in Rutherford Co was a resident of Murfreesboro. I suppose he forgot for which office he was elected.

I believe the city should change their logo from "Creating a Better Quality of Life" to "We're Coming to an Area Near You" or "To Infinity and Beyond"

The scariest words are... "hello, I'm from the government and I'm here to help you!"
