Championship teams find ways to score with two outs.
If that's the case, then Riverdale's softball team is in great shape. For the second straight day Riverdale found a way to scratch across two-out runs in a 4-1 win over Mt. Juliet in the Class AAA state softball tournament Wednesday at McKnight Park. The Lady Warriors are 2-2 against Mt. Juliet this season and play Soddy-Daisy 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
"Two-out hits are big," said Riverdale coach Jeff Breeden, whose squad improved to 50-4-1. "We talk about what separates champions is the ability to get two-out hits."
Against Knoxville Central Tuesday night junior pitcher Cat Hosfield had a two-out, two-RBI single, and sophomore first baseman Jessica Ayers added an RBI single.
The same players were at it against Mt. Juliet. With the score tied at 0 in the top of the fourth inning, Ayers blooped a two-out double to left field, scoring courtesy runner Maria Frebis and sophomore center fielder Ashia Terry, who had a two-out single.
"I've been put in that situation a lot," Ayers said. "I'm used to it. I put myself in that situation in practice."
Hosfield added a two-out RBI in the fifth with a single to right field that scored designated player Bre Thomas, who also singled to right field. Second baseman Jessica Whitens added a two-out double in the frame.
"Coach Breeden has been telling us all year to get two-out hits," said Terry, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. "That's why we're winning. We're stepping up and getting hits."
Riverdale had 10 hits against Knoxville Central and added seven against Mt. Juliet and Virginia Tech signee Kenzie Roark.
"We produced down in the order better," Breeden said. "(Kelsey Woodruff) and Whitens didn't have huge days, but we got hits in the bottom of the order."
Hosfield (44-3) struck out 15, walked none and surrendered only three hits. She's three strikeouts away from taking sole possession of fourth place on the single-season strikeout record book.
The run she surrendered in the sixth inning marks the first time in eight games a team has scored against Riverdale, which has outscored the opposition 50-2 in the postseason.
