Last season Siegel knocked off Riverdale in the postseason.
But this isn't last season.
This time Siegel didn't get a late grand slam to beat Riverdale. Instead, the Lady Warriors jumped on Siegel and coasted to a 6-0 win in the District 7-AAA softball tournament Monday at Oakland High School's Nelson Smotherman Field.
"It's a good win for us," said Riverdale coach Jeff Breeden, whose squad improved to 43-4-1. This is the fourth straight season Riverdale's won at least 40 games.
"We came out, got a lead and put it in cruise control," Breeden added.
The Lady Warriors improved to 3-0 this season against Siegel and have outscored the Lady Stars 14-0.
Riverdale junior Cat Hosfield, a University of Tennessee commitment, struck out 12 en route to improving to 37-3-2. She walked only two and had a no-hitter until the fourth inning when Amy Roeger, who had two of Siegel's three hits, slapped a single to right field.
"We knew we had to keep it up every inning," said Hosfield, who has 538 strikeouts this season and is 21 strikeouts from tying the Tennessee single-season strikeout record held by former David Lipscomb standout Megan Rhodes.
"We threw a lot more pitches than we wanted to, but it's still a shutout. It's still 12 Ks," Hosfield added. Riverdale jumped on Siegel (30-14) with three runs on five hits in the first inning. Catcher Kelsey Woodruff delivered the big blow with a two-RBI double that scored second baseman Alice O'Brien and left fielder Kelsey Choate, both of whom singled to start the frame. Senior shortstop Jessica Whitens, who doubled, scored on an RBI single by center fielder Ashia Terry.
Whitens also scored in the third inning.
"We hit well in the first inning," Hosfield said.
Terry, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, scored on a passed ball in the third inning. First baseman Jessica Ayers, who went 2-for-3, plated Whitens with a single. Amber Bailey scored Riverdale's last run.
"We put the ball in play," Siegel coach Karen Green said. "We didn't play well defensively. Eventually we'll put together one game against (Riverdale)."
Kristen Parker (6-6) surrendered six hits in 2 1/3 innings for the loss.
Riverdale plays Lebanon 8 p.m. today, while Siegel plays Warren County 6 p.m. today.
· Lebanon beat Blackman 6-1 Monday night, while Oakland's season ended with a 5-4 loss to White County. |
