Blackman sophomore Natalie Papini pitched a great game Monday night, but Riverdale junior pitcher Cat Hosfield pitched a perfect game.
Papini surrendered only one run on five hits, but Hosfield struck out 18 in a perfect-game win as host Riverdale triumphed 1-0.
"Both pitched well," said Riverdale coach Jeff Breeden, whose squad improved to 34-3-1, 8-0 in District 7-AAA. "Papini held us to one run, and Cat was dominant. That's all you can say."
Hosfield picked up her 1,000th career strikeout at Riverdale when she fanned Papini in the third inning — she has 1,010 strikeouts for the Lady Warriors — and she struck out the side five teams.
Blackman didn't hit a fair ball until the sixth inning when Papini grounded out to second baseman Jessica Whitens. Two batters — Courtney Cahoon and Amanda Hunley — popped out to third baseman Megan Chesney.
"I wanted to shut them down and not let them score," said Hosfield, a University of Tennessee commitment who earned all-state honors last season. "I just wanted to win. It's a rivalry game."
Hosfield (28-2), who has a 0.14 ERA, has thrown four no-hitters and two perfect games this season.
"We gave it a great effort," said Blackman coach Scott Dorsett, whose squad dropped to 10-14, 5-3 in District 7-AAA. "One swing was the difference in the game."
The big hit came in the third inning when sophomore center fielder Ashia Terry, who turned 16 Monday, hit her first Riverdale home run when she took a Papini pitch over the left-field fence.
"She pitched it inside," said Terry, who hits ninth in the lineup. "I was ready, and I hit it."
Riverdale loaded the bases in the sixth inning as shortstop Kelsey Woodruff and designated player Breana Thomas, who went 2-for-2, each singled to right field. Second baseman Jessica Whitens, who doubled in the second inning, walked in the sixth.
Papini, however, responded by getting first baseman Jessica Ayers to ground into a fielder's choice and Chesney to ground to first base.
"To me (Papini's) in the same mold as Cat," Dorsett said. "When she's a senior she's going to be a stud pitcher."
Riverdale plays host to Siegel 7 p.m. Tuesday, while Blackman entertains Cookeville 7 p.m. Tuesday.
