Riverdale entered Tuesday's softball game at Siegel seeking revenge.
Siegel, after all, rallied to beat Riverdale 4-3 in the Region 4-AAA title game last season, forcing the Lady Warriors to hit the road for their sectional game against Soddy-Daisy.
Led by Cat Hosfield, who surrendered only one hit and struck out 18, Riverdale blanked Siegel 5-0.
"It's Siegel. It was revenge," said Hosfield, who suffered the loss to Siegel in the region tournament last year but improved to 21-2 this season. "I knew we had to do something great."
Hosfield, who's committed to the University of Tennessee, struck out the side in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings. Siegel's only hit came in the second inning when Sami McCampbell (9-5), who suffered the loss, slapped a single to center field in the second inning.
"It might've been a little bit of revenge with Cat," said Riverdale coach Jeff Breeden, whose squad improved to 26-3-1, 5-0 in District 7-AAA. "We hit the ball soundly. It was a good night for us."
Riverdale had six hits, and two were home runs. Second baseman Jessica Whitens, who went 1-for-2, delivered a big blow with a two-run home run over the right-center fence in the third inning, giving Riverdale a 4-0 lead. The homer scored shortstop Kelsey Woodruff, who was hit by a pitch.
"I've never hit a scoreboard," Whitens said of the home run. "I liked doing that. It gets me pumped up." Woodruff, who went 2-for-2, scored twice and was hit by a pitch twice, hit a solo homer in the seventh inning.
"We wanted to come in here and get them back," Whitens said.
Riverdale jumped on Siegel with two runs in the first inning. Hosfield, who went 1-for-4, gave Riverdale a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to right field that scored designated player Alice O'Brien, who singled. Woodruff scored the Lady Warriors' second run when Whitens reached on an error by Siegel shortstop Amy Burns.
"We always stress setting the tone early," said Siegel coach Karen Green, whose squad is 19-8, 3-1 in District 7-AAA. "We did set the tone early — just in an opposite way."
McCampbell surrendered six hits, struck out five and hit four batters.
Riverdale plays host to Coffee County 7 p.m. Wednesday, while Siegel will compete in the Waverly Diamond Classic Friday and Saturday. |
