Linebaugh switches to electronic courtesy notices

To save money and support the County’s environmental initiatives, Linebaugh Public Library System (LPLS) will no longer print and mail out courtesy notices, a move that begins July 1.

LPLS currently prints and mails more than 300 courtesy notices each week.Eliminating printed courtesy notices will save the Library nearly $10,000 annually, roughy the cost of 500 new books.

“Our goal is to be good stewards of public funds,” Library director Rita Shacklett said. “With budget constraints and postage increases, we are trying to come up with some creative solutions. We ask for the cooperation of our community to return their materials so that others may use the titles in our collection.”

Library patrons may add email addresses to their accounts (in person, by phone, or online) if they would like reminders about overdue materials. Patrons who sign up for email notices will receive a courtesy reminder two days before materials are due and when items are one week, two weeks and three weeks late.

In addition, receipts are generated for library transactions that take place at the main library or our branches. Patrons are encouraged to keep the receipts and review them carefully. Additionally, patrons may review their accounts online at any time or call the library and ask the staff to review their accounts with them.

LPLS recently went with paperless applications for new library cards in a step to lead the community in environmental responsibility.

“Now, when you sign up for a library card, circulation clerks enter your address directly from your driver’s license or mail. It saves potential patrons a step by not having to do paperwork and it saves the library the expense of paper purchased and later shredded," said Heather Lanier, Circulation Supervisor. “As with all of our transactions, there is a learning curve. Please be patient with us as we enter your information and do not hesitate to contact us if there is an error listed on your account.”
