MTSU football player charged with burglary

Travis Lilienthal
An MTSU football player was charged with burglary and theft Monday after being accused of stealing from his roommates, his arrest warrant stated.

Suspect Travis Lilienthal, an offensive lineman, was charged with two counts of aggravated burglary and two counts of theft by MTSU Police Detective Brett Huskey.

In his arrest warrant, Huskey accused Lilienthal of breaking into rooms on MTSU Boulevard occupied by freshman quarterback Brent Burnette and roommate Thomas McLeroy.

A witness told Huskey Lilienthal took the property by entering the rooms without permission and taking property. The witness told Huskey where to find the stolen property.

When he searched, Huskey found the stolen property at an undisclosed location.

Lilienthal turned himself into the sheriff’s office Monday night where he was released on bond. A hearing is set May 5 in General Sessions Court.

This is his second burglary charge in five months. Lilienthal was charged with auto burglary, public intoxication and consumption of alcohol under age 21 in December by Murfreesboro Police Officer James Smith.

In an MTSU Athletics press release, Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill announced today Lilienthal was dismissed from the team due to violation of team rules.

Lilienthal is a redshirt freshman offensive lineman from Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro.

"This football team has strict rules and standards that we expect to be followed on a daily basis," said Stockstill. "We wish him well in his future endeavors."

MT has a long way to catch up with the STate school in Knoxville.

The UT players have their share of problems too.

ItsGood, You are an idiot.

You have to remember that MTSU has a history of recruiting out of the prison system.

Footballers aren't typically known for their smarts... Second offense in five months, this fella has a problem.

Anyone remember the two players arrested a couple of years ago on weapons charges? The 3rd string lineman was cut from the team, but the starting all conference player wasn't even suspended! Maybe MTSU should consder background checks on their athletes.

Come on guys? Try to control 80 18,19and 20 yr. olds that have been treated like superstars at their high schools. I assure you that the general population has a higher percentage of arrests than most football teams.

By the way, MTSU has a $27mil budget and UT has a $77mil budget. Not apples to apples.

I'm totally shocked that an upstanding football player is implicated in this crime. It must be an epidemic considering all the footballers I see in the news constantly that are committing illegal offenses. Maybe we should all buy more tickets to games so they don't feel the need fight dogs, drive drunk, beat wives, burglarize etc... Football/basketball feeds on the hopes and dreams of the disadvantaged and cashes the check to support the GM or Dean.

oh and whizkid, back up your statement... or just leave it hanging to show your ignorance. and Im going to spell it out for you... cite your references on the statistics you have provided.

Whiz, you struck a chord... Since when do adults need to be controlled? Ya wanna strap a shock collar on them? I can think about all of nobody I went to school with at that age who, coincidentally were not football playahz?, who did not commit violent crimes or larceny. Juggheads are better suited as janitors and not athletes. I should also say that I applaud all the upstanding professional athletes that realize the are setting examples for the kids that will follow in their footsteps.

Should have been dismissed the first go around.

I'm totally shocked that an upstanding football player is implicated in this crime."... Upstanding? How? If this is his 2nd burglary offense in 5 months, exactly HOW is he UPSTANDING? And, really, I don't see how buying tickets to games is going to make the footballers not "...fight dogs, drive drunk, beat wives, burglarize etc..." They don't get anything based on ticket sales. They play the game whether 10 people show up or 10,000 people.

And whizkid's statement really doesn't have anything to do with the story.

And since when do adults need to be controlled? You do understand that there is a prison system for adults who couldn't control themselves... and, "...I should also say that I applaud all the upstanding professional athletes that realize the are setting examples for the kids that will follow in their footsteps..." Let's see, Michael Vick, PacMan Jones... that's a list that can go on and on and on....
