Husband shoots wife while distracted by Cher

Watching Cher on television distracted a husband cleaning a handgun, causing him to accidentally shoot his wife in the wrist Sunday afternoon, a Murfreesboro Police officer said.

Husband Stephen Summers of Bolden Drive was showing wife, Evy Elaine, how to clean and disassemble a Glock firearm, Officer Palmer Gibbs reported. They were distracted while watching Cher.

“Mr. Summers cocked the Glock and it went off and struck Mrs. Summers,” Gibbs reported.

She was treated at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. Detective Paul Mongold is investigating.

Police spokesman Kyle Evans said it’s especially advised when cleaning a gun to make sure the firearm is unloaded and treated as loaded until confirmed otherwise. Never point a gun loaded or unloaded at anybody or anything.

“We have seen cases where people have accidentally shot televisions, caused damage to their house and in this case another human being,” Evans said.

In a close quarter area such as the city limits of Murfreesboro, it’s especially important to exercise gun safety because of the close proximity of other houses, he added.

Another fine example of a idiot that has no reason to handel a gun! Take classes or somthing? Anyone knows that when breaking a gun down to clean FIRST You pull the clip out,Then make sure theres not a bullit in the chamber? Always point the gun at the ground & never have your fing near the trigger......

He missed. His wife had him watching Cher. It may have been a murder/suicide gone wrong.

This is why gun ownership is given such a bad rap. Because of the few idiot we all look bad.

Why the guy made a mistake watching a long time favorite music idol and you guys think he commited murder. Men, we are not new and I have seen some guys almost wreck there four wheel drive extended pickup trucks looking at women going down the road with short shorts and bikini tops on. Lets not be so hard on the gun man.

My, has any of us never done anything out of stupidity or ignorance? Everyday. So I guess we are all stupid and ignorant.

I've owned a gun since I was seven years old and knew better than that since then

By: barrettbear on 3/4/09
I am sure though you have done something before out of stupidity or ignorance. Do not try to play innocent.

barrettbear-good point on men being distracted with anything in a bikini (whether they need to be wearing one or not). For me, it's the whole Cher reference. I wonder how much coverage this story would have recieved if the man had been distracted by a football game :-)
