Chris Young tickets still available from MTSU Ticket Office | Chris Young

Chris Young
Country music may be this homegrown crooner’s first love, but Chris Young’s rich baritone was classically trained to perform a wide range of musical styles.

And while the Murfreesboro native will perform country music at his upcoming concert with the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra, the evening will allow his fans to experience a whole new dimension to his songs, while introducing them to the orchestra.

When Young takes the stage of Murphy Center on the MTSU campus Feb. 21 backed by his band and 22 strings, it will be the first-time the 2006 Nashville Star winner has performed a concert in his hometown in roughly two years.

New orchestrations of songs from Young’s self-titled debut on RCA Records, which opened at No. 3 on the Billboard County Music charts in October 2006, and even a few new songs from his upcoming release, will be performed at this unique concert.

Symphony director Jeffrey Reed is known for these types of unorthodox concerts, where orchestral music is mixed with popular music.

It’s his way of attracting more listeners to the symphony, exposing new generations to rethink what a symphony concert is all about.

And Reed assures country fans that the concert won’t be filled with elevator music.

“It is like taking the record and adding the orchestra,” he said.

“There is nothing like hearing a performer with an orchestra,” Reed added later. “I guess people don’t know they miss it until they hear it. Performers love it because they know what it adds to their performance.”

Introducing violins, violas and cellos will undoubtedly add depth and more emotion to Young’s songs of love and heartache.

“I am very excited to hear the arrangements (performed),” Young said.

The budding country star talked to the Murfreesboro Post about life following his Nashville Star win recently while waiting for a flight to Kansas City, Mo.

“Life is pretty good,” the singer said laughing.

He hasn’t stop traveling the nation since landing a recording contract through the reality show Nashville Star, including several stops to his hometown with just his acoustic guitar to play charity events or support his local community.

Young, who still calls Murfreesboro home, said he is still working on becoming a country music star.

“Patience is not a virtue I have,” he said.

Getting his songs played on the radio and his albums sold in the record store is taking a little longer than he has anticipated, but despite that Young feels “really lucky” about the things he has accomplished so far in his life.

For instance, he can’t believe he has performed at the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry more than 30 times.

Now, Young is on the road promoting his latest single “Gettin’ You Home.” Young is visiting radio shows, playing casinos and clubs to build the buzz for his new single.

But, he always looks forward to coming home to Murfreesboro and playing for a hometown crowd who has supported his music career from the beginning.

Fans can listen to the song now on Young’s My Space page at www.myspace.com/chrisyoungmusic.

His second album is set to release in May and features a duet with country legend Willie Nelson.

“It is looking like it is going to be a good year,” Young said.
