Fifty senior citizens and families received an early Christmas present Thursday from Murfreesboro Police and the Human Resource Center at Franklin Heights apartments.
Police officers packed boxes of ham, canned vegetables and fruits, soups, stuffing, soft drinks, pastas, mashed potatoes and snacks, said coordinator Sgt. David Johnson.
"It gives them something to eat for Christmas," Johnson said.
Officer Jacoby O'Gwynn said 90 percent of the recipients are senior citizens.
The recipients were identified by police officers who knew their needs and the human resources center.
Officer Sam Day packed baskets with O'Gwynn.
"It's nice for us to give back to the community other than being seen as being the bad guys writing tickets," Day said.
Lt. Steve Teeters said Oakland High School students brought stuffed animals such as Precious Moments and Ty Beanie Babies for police to give to children.
Officers included stuffed animals in the boxes. Other stuffed animals will be given to children in crashes and in domestic situations.
"It helps console them," Teeters said.
Police hope the food boxes will console the senior citizens as well.
