All three major networks called the presidential race for Democrat Barack Obama at 10 tonight as the polls closed on the West Coast.
The network projections set Obama's electoral total at at least 284 votes with 270 needed for victory over Republican challenger John McCain.
Obama would become the first black American president.
Key wins in Ohio and Pennsyslvania boosted Obama to his apparent win.
Election Day polls by all networks strongly identified as economy as far and away the leading issue among voters.
McCain carried Tennessee and in Rutherford County voting with 14 of 48 precincts unreported led by a 60-40 percent margin.
