Playoff hopes remain alive for three Rutherford County Class 5A teams.
Oakland defeated Siegel 21-10 at home to win the Region 4 title and to secure a playoff slot. Trailing 10 to 7 at half-time, the Oakland defense tightened up and shut down the Stars’ offense, forcing two important second half turnovers.
The North Murfreesboro defensive brawl began with a Patriot fumble on Oakland’s first play of the game. Siegel scored on the next play with a fumble — their first of five — on the Patriots' first play and scored 14 seconds into the game on a 27-yard pass reception by Marc Gooch.
In the final nine minutes of the game, Oakland – trailing by three – locked down the victory with two Precious Valentine touchdown runs.
The victory gave Oakland its first playoff shot in the last five years.
Siegel is still in the playoff picture, but faces a must-win game Halloween night against Lebanon.
State Champion Smyrna Bulldogs knocked Riverdale out of the playoff race.
Playing at Riverdale’s Tomahawk Stadium, Smyrna dominated most of the 31-20 game despite a final half rally by the Warriors. This will be the first time Riverdale hasn’t been in postseason play since 1990.
Middle Tennessee Christian School stayed in contention for a region 5-1A playoff berth with a 20-13 home victory over White House-Heritage Friday night. MTCS plays host to Chapel Hill’s Forrest High Halloween night in a game that could decide the Cougars’ playoff fate.
Wilson Central scored two TDs early to knock off La Vergne, 14-7, in the Wolverine’s last home game of the season.
Eagleville fell 28-14 to visiting Clarksville Academy in a Region 5-1A game.
