Gwendolyn "Gwenn" Pompey Walker, age 66, lived in Hillsborough, NC, but formerly of Murfreesboro, died Aug. 22, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James E. Walker, former president of MTSU and Southern Illinois University.
She graduated from Valdosta High School, her bacholers degree in special education from Clark University, and her masters degree from Penn State University. She worked for several years as a special education teacher and worked at Project H.E.L.P. in Murfreesboro, TN. After the death of her husband, she moved to North Carolina to help take care of her grandsons.
She leaves to cherish sweet memories, daughters, Dr. Jamell Walker (fiance' Timothy Carr) of New Orleans, La. and Jabrina Walker (Andrew) Robinson of Hillsborough, N.C.; mother, Mamie Lou Pompey of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Shirley (Tommy) Sheats of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Edwin Pompey of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandsons, Walker Robinson and Leland Robinson, both of Hillsborough, N.C.; sister-in-law, Rubye Pompey of Valdosta, Ga..
Visitation is 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 at Scales & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral service is 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Murfreesboro.
