One of MTSU's best bands, Overzealous, will be performing at The Boro on Greenland Ave. on Dec. 8 at 9 p.m. as part of their southeastern tour. The Brit-rock band has had great success in Middle Tennessee and has garnered much acclaim for their independent film Novem and their latest recorded release Turn to Clear Vision. Apart from its success, Overzealous has had to overcome a band member's deployment to Iraq as well as another member's struggle with cancer.
Overzealous consists of Dustin Sellers (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Brad Crittenden (guitar, vocals, piano), Eric Hill (drums and vocals) and Tim Adler (bass and vocals). The band officially began in Maryville, Tenn., with Sellers and Crittenden; Adler and Hill joined afterward due to a little bit of luck and good timing. Overzealous relocated to Murfreesboro in 2002 and recorded a self-titled EP in 2003 after winning a battle of the bands that included free studio time.
Later in 2003, Overzealous was introduced to movie producer Brad Kimmel, who cast the members for a film project entitled Novem about a touring band of nine in the 1970s that is tragically killed in a car accident. The band contributed five songs to the movie's soundtrack. Since the movie's release, it has won Audience Choice Award and Best Soundtrack Award at the Phoenix Film Festival in 2005, as well as Best Indiana Film and Best Cast Performance at the 2005 Indianapolis Film Festival, and finally the Audience Choice Award at the Beloit International Film Festival in 2006.
Just when Overzealous was tested their hardest with Tim at war and Brad down with illness, the band came out strong with flying colors in 2006 when they were able to overcome all their circumstances and were back together again, healthy and in one piece.
Overzealous' new CD, Turn To Clear Vision, clearly has authentic 90's and British rock influence, more specifically, the Beatles, Superdrag, and Silverchair. Their hard work and genuine talent caught the eye of MTSU's student record label Scared Rabbit Records. The label signed Overzealous as its first band in Fall 2006 and plans to have several shows lined up for the band as well as an album party in the following months.
Until then you can check out these rockstars at Murfreesboro's The Boro Bar and Grill on Dec. 8 as well as shows in Knoxville, Cookeville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Ala., and Evansville, Ind., throughout the winter. If you can't make it to a show, be their friend on MySpace at www.myspace.com/overzealousmusic and visit their website at www.overzealous.net.
