In the City Council race, incumbents Vice Mayor Chris Bratcher and Councilmen Toby Gilley and Ron Washington fought off challengers Dave Beardsley, Eddie Smotherman and Jeff Weems to retain their at-large city council seats.

Washington came out on top with 2,469 votes followed by Toby Gilley with 2,286 votes and Bratcher with 2,237.

Smotherman came in a close fourth with 2,049 votes. Beardsley’s 1,927 votes placed fifth and Weem’s only garnered 1,356 votes.

The polls were also slow during the election with only 4,679 of 53,696 or 8.71 percent of registered voters casting ballots.

“That’s an all time low,” said Hooper Penuel, Rutherford County elections administrator.

The low turn out is no surprise when considering only 6,267, or 12 percent of registered voters, voted in the last municipal election held in April 2006. The 2004 municipal election saw similar turnout with 12 percent of 40,405 registered voters showing up.

However, more than 11,000 Rutherford Countians cast a vote during the early voting period for the presidential primary in February.
