New law limits fireworks sales to age 16

A new age limit on purchasing fireworks helps stores ensure that the dangerous entertainment doesn’t make it into small hands.

State law allows 10-year-olds to purchase fireworks from retailers until July 1, when the age limit rises to 16.

David Meeks, manager of the Fireworks Supermarket on South Church Street, said before it was difficult to ask for identification from a child to make sure they are old enough to buy fireworks.

The supermarket limited sales to children over 13, but 13-year-olds don’t have driver’s licenses.

“We didn’t just let kids buy fireworks and leave. We made sure they had their parents with them,” Meeks said.

The new law still allows for children over 10 to purchase fireworks from roadside stands, but now they have to have a parent with them to purchase from a store.

“Most people who come have their parents with them anyway. They really should be 16 or have some kind of adult supervision,” Meeks said.

Even with the higher age restriction in place, Meeks doesn’t think it will hurt business.

“It’s not like we have kids riding their bikes up to the store,” he said.

O-K, After 7/1 a sixteen year old can by them from a store, and a 10 year old can buy them at a roadside stand (without a parent?) but if same 10 year old buys them at a store he must have a parent with him? Did my brain just fail to synapse today?

Once again government proves it has no common sense.
And once again it is government instilling more rules and regulations upon we the people. They have just about ruled and regulated kids from doing anything that we adults use to do. Since when did kids get so whimpy or parents no control over their kids? I don't think they have except in the eye of the government who just wants to be in on everything we do and would prefer to raise our children and control us.
