In regard to the new govenor's philosophical comments regarding "improving" Tennessee education should be added, "You can lead a horse (student) to water, but you can't make it drink."
Bear in mind that the new governor is a very successful business man, not an educator. There is a hugh difference.
Every govenor since when has proclaimed the need to "improve" education. Every govenor since when has introduced a new scheme to "improve" education. Every scheme has placed more and more burden and blame on the classroom teacher. Every scheme has failed.
It is past time to look at reality.
As a veteran educator in the Tennessee public school system, I conclude that the road to success in education is academic freedom for teachers in their subject area. Stop dictating what, when, and how to teach.
Obviously, reduce class size.
Have a pay scale that attracts quality educators with quality degrees in education. The best minds are not going to work for peanuts.
Reduced emphasis on standardized testing. Recognize that the classroom teacher is far more important than statistics and government intervention in the classroom.
Now, don't get started on the tax dollar and expense thing. I already know that everyone is for lower taxes. You get what you pay for. You also pay for what you get. If you want a Wal-Mart school system, then "Ax the Tax".
Its a mistake to leave the education of our youth to political whims and "standard" test scores.
