Charges are pending against a mother accused of neglecting her 6-year-old autistic son and a toddler Saturday at her home off Jefferson Pike, a sheriff’s detective said.

Detective Ralph Mayercik said he plans to charge the mother after completing his investigation. This is the second time this year deputies responded to the mother’s children wandering in the neighborhood.

Deputies responded about 3 p.m. Saturday to Stones Throw Road after witnesses reported the boy wearing only a pull-up diaper roamed the neighborhood close to busy Jefferson Pike, Cpl. Nathan Pagel reported.

Deputy Michael Greenwood located the child with scratches on his face and body. Emergency Medical Services paramedics Clay Jackson and Bryan Chew checked the boy.

Pagel tried to get someone to answer the door of the boy’s home and entered a window. He found the toddler and the 27-year-old mother sleeping in the garage with a space heater running on high within one foot of them. He awoke the mother and asked her where her son was.

“She responded she did not know and had been sleeping,” Pagel reported.

Mayercik questioned the mother who admitted smoking marijuana the night before and taking medication for depression that makes her sleepy.

Deputy Greenwood located a metal tin with what appeared to be marijuana residue next to the bed. After searching the house, Mayercik found marijuana in a bag.

“We also located two milk bottles containing what appeared to be spoiled milk,” Pagel said.

The mother and toddler slept in an area near a lawn mower, gas can and other assorted materials, the corporal reported.

Department of Children’s Services employees were notified. The boy was placed temporarily into a neighbor’s custody.

A heighbor's custody. Good grief, thats the best they can do. Let me never get into trouble in this county. Next thing you know they will be giving children to pedophiles because they give them so much attention.

Farmall I read your post and I have determined you are just an ignorant person. However 1st amendment covers ignorant people too. Just once I wish you could articulate a valid and or logical viewpoint.

So you think it was a good idea to give the child to a neighbor. Instead of somebody who was trained and suited to take of of a needy child. As a parent of a delayed child my opinon means so little to you.

than say that, why bring in pedophiles and "good grief" is that the best they can do. Do a little research, that this state and this county has no foster homes that are willing to take children with any handicaps, or state facilities that can care from them. Neighbors are availabe only after adequate records checks and other responsible relatives are enroute to relieve the situation. The real problem is, the state does not provide adequate care of children in this situation and the state policy dictates that a DCS worker must do everything possible to keep the family intact, regardless of the maltreatment; our state, our governer and our local courts support this doctrine. so there in lies the real problem with our society, "that is the best they can do". Back it up with something.

Now think for a moment, if something, anything, doesn't have to be anything very serious happens to this child while in the neighbors care. The parent(s) will sue the crud out of the county. And in my opinion rightly so. If you are going to take the child away then your obligated for the welfare of that child. Giving a child to a "neighbor" just opens up a bag of Possibilities. Now if this neighbor has been through the screening and trainning stc. then ok. But it would have read something like placed with a foster family. I would sure like someone with DCS to explain this. But I imagine they can't get permission to speak.
