The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down Saturday evening at Scott Street and wreaked havoc for about a mile before picking back up at the corner of Memorial and Clark boulevards.

“It was a really short lived tornado,” explained Tim Hooker, assistant director of Rutherford County Emergency Services.

The NWS classified the tornado as an EF-1 with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, maximum width of 50 yards and path of one mile. No one was seriously injured, but an estimated more than $4.4 million in property damage occurred.

Recovery time from the tornado could be weeks or months, depending on structural assessments, Hooker said. Hooker said the damages from the strong winds associated with the tornado were mostly business related

. The tornado did significant damage to Jackson Heights mall and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as homes and businesses between Broad Street and Memorial Boulevard.

“The residences escaped a lot of damage,” he said, explaining it was mostly roof and tree damage. Hooker said Middle Tennessee Christian School also reported wind damage, which was mostly tree and debris related.

The City of Murfreesboro offered the McFadden Youth Center to the Boys & Girls Club to use starting Monday.

The club will be returning to its roots as the McFadden Center at 211 Bridge Avenue served as the club’s home site for many years before the Jones Boulevard building was built. Michelle Willard can be contacted at 615-869-0816 or mwillard@murfreesboropost.com.
