Nashville Storm blasts through competition

Football season is almost here but there is a minor league team, the Nashville Storm, that has been making history.

On Saturday, the undefeated 5-0 squad lived up to the name after knocking off the St Charles Cyclones 27-23 in Warrenton, MO for their 26th straight road win.  The Cyclones came into the game winning 58 out of the last 62 games. Speaking of a storm, one blew through the area right before the first half ended and delayed the game until 10 pm local time.

Strom quarterback Phellepe (that is the correct spelling) Hall threw four touchdown passes in the victory, the most given up in a game by St Charles in their history.

Earlier this season, these two teams met here in Nashville and the weather played a factor. The game was stopped on June 26, seven plays in. The game restarted over two hours later at 10 pm and the Storm won 14-0. It also marked another milestone with the team’s 100th overall victory in the squad history. They followed that up with two wins against the Louisville Saints and the Kings Comets.

“It was great,” Storm linebacker Nathaniel Claybrooks said after the 100th victory. “It was a milestone that we accomplished.”

This is Claybrooks’ 10th season with the team after playing his college ball at MTSU. He was named to the All-America team in 1995. He later played in Arena Football, including a stop with the Nashville Kats.

However, he did not make the trip to St. Charles this past weekend due to prior obligations. Several reserves stepped up, including fellow linebacker Jerrod Edmonson blocking a punt that led to the Storm’s game-winning touchdown.

“We keep having key additions to the team,” Claybrooks said. “The team has grown drastically.”

Last season, the Storm finished the season 14-1, but lost in the North America Football League championship game to the St. Paul Pioneers by a last season field goal, 23-21. This season, the Storm is a perfect 5-0, and they are looking head to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the title game. Claybrooks said the team has several goals they want to achieve for the end of the year. The Storm has played in two title games since being formed in 2002.

“We want to go undefeated, make the playoffs, get homefield advantage, go to the championship and win it,” Claybrooks said.

The Storm returns home Saturday night against the Indy Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m. on the campus of Stratford High School in Nashville.
