NAACP asks Justice Dept. to probe inmate death | NAACP, Andron Reed

State NAACP President Gloria Sweet-Love announces the Department of Justice will hear complaints about excessive force and police misconduct. Surrounding her are ministers, a Hispanic leader and NAACP members.
Questions surrounding the death of an 18-year-old jail inmate prompted a civil rights group and a church to ask for a federal Department of Justice investigation.

Inmate Andron Reed of Memphis died Aug. 15 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center after being booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center the previous day on multiple charges after a high-speed pursuit and struggle with state troopers.

State President Gloria J. Sweet-Love of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said she was concerned about the death of Reed, a healthy young man with no signs of epilepsy or other medical problems. NAACP and the Missionary Baptist State Convention asked for the Justice Department investigation.

The groups will sponsor a community meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Allen Chapel M.B. Church at 224 S. Maney Ave. in Murfreesboro to hear complaints by “all people of color” about misconduct of law enforcement officers and excessive use of force, she said.

As the mother of four sons, Sweet-Love said she was concerned about Reed and other young men. Reed is not the only case involving complaints about excessive use of force by law enforcement.

“That was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Sweet-Love said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Goodwin referred inquiries to the TBI and the state medical examiner’s office who ruled Reed’s “was caused by a congenital heart defect.”

An autopsy by Dr. Amy McMaster of the state medical examiner’s office found Reed died of natural causes due to an abnormal growth inside the wall of the arteries.

“He was not beaten to death,” McMaster said.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents are investigating Reed’s death. TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said the case is still ongoing.

During the press conference, Sweet-Love said she wants the Department of Justice to do arbitrations and mediations.

“We want the entire process to be transparent,” Sweet-Love said.

During the meeting, complaints will be taken about law enforcement officers in the city and county.

“We want every citizen in this county to be safe,” Sweet-Love said, adding she wanted people who are stopped by officers to be treated with dignity and respect.

After the press conference, the Rev. James Thomas, pastor of Jefferson Street Baptist Church in Nashville, and chairman of the Social Action Committee of the Missionary Baptist Association of Tennessee, said the group didn’t want to belittle law enforcement.

“We just want fair treatment in the community,” the Rev. Thomas said.

President Goldy Wade of the Murfreesboro NAACP chapter said the concerns are “so great we wanted the public to come in and share their concerns.”

Missionary Baptist State Convention received complaints along with the state NAACP, he said.

Tommy Vallejos of the Hispanic Organization for Progress and Education joined the NAACP at the press conference.

“We are all united and concerned about issues,” Wade said.

The Rev. Richard Siebert said NAACP has tried to meet and discuss issues with the sheriff’s office but heard through the Department of Justice the sheriff’s office will not respond.

“We’re very concerned about that,” the Rev. Siebert said. “I hope that it will bring awareness here to people other than ourselves what has happened here” to Reed and to make the sheriff’s office and law enforcement aware of issues. Police brutality is escalating.

“We want police to arrest thugs, we don’t want police acting like thugs,” the Rev. Siebert said.

Andron Reed was a young thug who more than likely was on multiple drugs that speed up the heart rate and effects on the cardiovascular system. He was also stressed by being chased by the police and more than likely detained with appropriate force. The NAACP is wasting their time on this one in my opinion.

I don't understand...an autopsy has already been done and the cause of death determined. Why waste time and money on something that we already know?

The police arrested a thug who died because of his own behavior and the NAACP needs to get over it.

I used to want to be a police officer when I grow up, but if I'm going to be hunted by "civil rights organizations" for doing my job, I might as well be wearing a witch costume.

Rev. Siebert what proof do ya have of increased brutality... not a thing. You are correct in one fact, that Law Enforcement agencies want to arrest thugs, however; they should not be pre-judged without proof by group thugs who just want their picture taken.. back at ya, Rev.... wait for the facts to come out.

I'm blessed to live in a community where there is less racial bias than any where I've ever resided. My feeling is that the "evidence" will show the medical examiner had no reason to lie or was biased in any way...

It must be slow at the NAACP.

The NAACP has to stir the pot every now and then to justify their existance.

There you go NAACP, continue to divide us.

I listened to excerpts of the speeches in front of City Hall by the minority leaders and what stood out most are words like "we" and "us" referring to the represented races and "them" referring to all others. Why wasn’t the Muslim population represented here? Certainly they have a proverbial cross to bear with all of the anti-terrorism laws and such.
You've got all of these organizations which are for certain races so that in itself is racism isn't it? If I started the National Association for the Advancement of White People I would be a racist wouldn't I? This country has become so politically correct that God is being erased from all of society along with whites. Why can't we have White Pride Day? The Caucasian population is quickly becoming the minority so why can't we piss and moan about not being treated fairly now?
Why don't we stand in line at Social Services and get all of our free stuff so we can sit around on the front stoop and watch everyone else work all day? I'll tell you why; statistics do not lie. The middle-upper income white population contributes most of the wealth to government. This class foots a large majority of the freeloading in this country by other sectors of the population. If you want to look at the figures you will find a "stereotypical" similarity to certain ethnicities which I will not point out. You may draw your own conclusions here.
I am not racist and I am open minded but the moment someone realizes their "oppression" is the moment they must stop using that as a social crutch and stand firm on their own good ethics and morality. White people die in the custody of law enforcement as well and you don’t see a national uprising to investigate that. The white population is riddled with criminals and just plain nasty people as well but the FBI’s statistics on crime show that inner city drugs, gangs, and violence are predominately all races but white. HELLO! If the shoe fits WEAR IT or change them and quit blaming history for your current situation and as an excuse for crapping on America.
It never ceases to amaze me when I see footage of riots in California when a certain ethnic group gets pissed about something and they rape, pillage, burn down, and loot THEIR OWN FREAKING NEIGHBORHOODS! That is mob mentality at its finest…stupid!
Wake up America before it’s too late and take your country back!

1st and foremost R.i.p Andron, Secondly he was not a thug. For those of you who choose to judge a book by its cover you should actually try opening it and reading it, and maybe you could relate to it. He had a family, goals, big dreams, and was determined to be the best person that he could be, and he is being labeled a thug, because he was speeding. They say he resisted arrest, Im pretty sure I would have to if I was being hit, poked, kicked, insulted. Death he didnt deserve, no matter how fast he sped away who he punched or struggled with, HE DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE, IN CUSTODY AT THAT. Forever Rest in Peace Andron Reed

I didn't realize we had a problem with police beating on people. As quick as the reporters are to report on negative activity involving the police I'M SURE they would have picked up on it by now, and if SOOO many people have had a problem with this why have they not come forward with the information to other agencies... SORRY let me answer that for you, I guess ALL the police departments are tied together and nothing would have been done anyways!! This whole thing is one big joke! GET OVER YOURSELVES... These are the same people that complain when nothing is being done, but when the police finally put their feet down and really start to enforce the "Bad areas" they cry about the, police are just picking on us. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS ON WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO! IF NOT KEEP YOUR MOUTHS SHUT, AND HANDLE YOUR OWN LIFES. I don't want their job if you have to put up with crap like that. I would rather shovel crap for 12 hours a day. To end with the name: WHAT IF they took the police away from those areas all together?

I voted for President Obama and would to it again, considering past 8 years and election alternatives...but during my professional career I was once "called a racist" by a local NAACP official after I had worked for creation of jobs (including minorities) and creation of a permanent site for a homeless shelter...so although I agree with racial equality, I don't always agree with wisdom displayed by local NAACP officials...who seem to need to justify themselves...
