Singers and musicians are making music to raise money for a girl who suffers with muscle and skin disorders.
The Rutherford Mass Choir Members and Musicians are calling all musicians and singers to join them in a benefit concert for Shardai Cousino of Smyrna.
Shardai was born missing portions of her skin with her proteins not fully developing. The condition causes painful skin blisters. Also, she was diagnosed with an inflammatory muscle disorder.
Friend Cassie Johnson met Shardai when she worked at Smyrna Middle School and helped change her bandages.
Shardai, now 16, needs a walk-in bathtub in her home, Johnson said. Her wheelchair does not fit into the bathroom so her grandmother must lift her and place her in a small bathtub.
Because of her skin condition, baths take hours, the friend said.
“They are excruciating,” Johnson said. “It’s just a painful, painful process.”
A walk-in bathtub would make it easier for Shardai to take baths and easier for her grandmother to ease her into the bathtub.
Elder Jimmy Tyson, who is organizing the mass choir, needs sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones and bass singers, a keyboardist, organist, pianist, drummers and guitar and bass players.
“Anybody who wants to sing and help this girl out is welcome to come,” Johnson said. “You don’t have to be a singer. You can do it for her benefit.”
Rehearsals are at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and at 10 p.m. Saturdays at Bellwood Baptist Church on Rutherford Boulevard. The concert will be Oct. 10 at Bellwood where a love offering will be taken for Shardai.
The last day to join will be Tuesday, Aug. 25.
